November 28, 2024Considering switching from Z9 to Z8. Change my mind?!?
I went the other way after my z8 got two recalls. Both brilliant cameras but I find the ergonomics of the 9 are noticeably better and the battery life is awesome. Neither is a compact or light camera (especially once you pack extra batteries for the 8), I still feel the benefits of the 9 outweigh the difference for me. The thing just feels like a tank. So I'm looking at moving to Mirrorless, leaving behind my D800.
I was originally looking at a Z6II/Z6III, but I've seen a few Z9's come up for sale and I am tempted by the Z8.... (Can anyone say gear creap?!) A used Z9 is about the same price as a used Z8, wondering what people think about the Z8 vs the Z9, any real advantages of either?

I bought Z8 not Z9 because of the smaller form factor and I didn’t really need that second CFExpress port. Z8 allows me to decide if I want a battery from or not, rather than have it forced onto me. I also do a lot of photography up mountains at altitude, and weight matters, Z8 is the best trade off there, and critically will fit into most bags with a lens attached, flat, whereas the Z9 is just too deep.

The Z9 has significantly longer battery life and in my opinion a better form factor. But coming from a D800, you may not feel that strongly about the form factor/ergonomics. And the ergonomics can be fixed with a grip. And if you do video, the hot-swappable batteries of the grip on the 8 is pretty damned cool. I was coming from a D5 and a D6…and transitioned to a Z9 and the D6. Now I carry the Z9 and Z8 and the D6 rides in the bag for the handful of times where mirrorless blows. Other than the battery life and ergonomics…I’m not sure of any differences worth noting. You will love either. When Nikon releases a Z9H, I will sell one of these to buy it. Which, I’m not sure yet.

Long story short, I purchased a Nikon Z9 last winter. It was an estate sale and I got it for an absolute deal. I paid 4500$ Cdn in mint like new shape with orig box, etc.
Amazing camera, no complaints. BUT. It's heavy, it's a beast, and it is a handful when I am out mountain biking.
With the Z8 on the new sale, I can sell my Z9 and get a Z8. However after I sell used, and pay new price plus tax it will come out even.
Is this a mistake in your opinion? I value portability, and I am not sure if there are any major differences other then the GPS, the larger battery, and the vertical grip. I would love to hear any pros and cons of making the change?!
Essentially I want something smaller for mountain biking/hiking. For lenses I have the 14-30f4,24-70f4. 70-200f2.8 and the 180-600.
Curious as to any thoughts/suggestions.

The Z8 is still pretty heavy compared to Nikon’s other bodies, but definitely an improvement over the Z9. If ergonomics are not super high up on your list of priorities, I would consider the Zf. It has the same autofocus as the Z8 and Z9 but in a much smaller and lighter package. However, it doesn’t have really much of a pronounced grip at all like Nikon’s other bodies. You can buy third party grips to slap on there for pretty cheap that helps some. Otherwise going to a Z8 from a Z9 you’ll be taking a noticeable hit in battery life. So bring a couple batteries with you to be safe.

Im a bit overwhelmed with all the features in the Z8 and the Z9. Of course there are the obvious ones like the battery grip and some differences in the button layout but Im talking about features, functions, settings and performance. The Nikon Z8 is often called the baby Z9 because it almost does everything the Z9 does. So whats the actual difference now?

Dual CF cards provide the ability for faster continuous shooting when using the 2nd card for backup. Full sized grip. Larger battery, longer life. Reportedly better with heat due to larger chassis. Ethernet port. These are the ones that are most significant to me.

One feature that Nikon fails on is not being able to shoot in raw in its preburst feature. It’s a great feature but to only be able to capture in jpeg is ridiculous.
