Nikon Z9 vs Canon EOS R3
May 11, 2023 - The biggest difference between these two cameras is resolution, with the Nikon Z9 having a 45-megapixel sensor compared to the Canon EOS R3’s 24 megapixels. A big win on Nikon’s part is that so many of the other specifications – maximum ...

r/nikon_Zseries on Reddit: Canon EOS R3 vs Nikon Z9 - build quality comparison only
July 30, 2025 -

Hey folks, I am curious about the build quality and weather proofing comparison only. I can compare all of the tech specs online, and I can see the prices too. Basically for those familiar with both of these bodies, if you were to place bets which one would survive a long hike in the mountains with rain, snow, dust, etc better? each would be paired with their own native, weather sealed, respective lenses. I should mention that I am posting this in both Canon and Nikon communities for balance. Thanks much !

I own a Z9 and have used the R3 quite a lot, both while evaluating which pro mirrorless system to go with, and also in the years since. Some of my colleagues shoot with it as well so I have continued exposure to it. Without a doubt the Z9 is the best bult professional camera on the market, and frankly it's not even close. I don't think you will find many people telling you otherwise. It is an absolute tank, and it is still the only high resolution gripped body on the market. That is also why some people do not like the camera - it weighs 3lbs with battery. That heft is also a reason why it will never overheat, and has such long recording limits. Both cameras are designed to stand up to the elements and will be fine under all normal use case, but if you're asking which camera would break first if you tried to destroy them, there is no doubt in my mind the Z9 would last longer. Go to a camera store and hold both of them for yourself, play with the buttons, switches, doors, etc. and it's very obvious the Z9 is built to a higher physical standard. Anecdotally, my Z9 has seen snow, rain, ~100% humidity, -35C, +40C, etc. and has never once skipped a beat. It's taken millions of photos and everything is exactly as new. All that being said, these are very different cameras. The R3 does not compete with the Z9 (it's not trying to), and are not really two cameras that you would normally cross shop. The R3 doesn't even have symmetrical card slots which is a hard deal breaker for a lot of professionals. The R3 is also one of the cameras where Canon cooks the RAW files with NR, and you cannot disable that. The R3 also does not have a truly blackout-free EVF, which is something you will notice if you are sensitive to that sort of thing. The list goes on. Have a look at the lens systems for each system as well, that is the #1 thing I would use to choose a camera system if you aren't already invested in something.

I don’t have to place bets seen it first hand. I use a z6iii personally just because I mainly like to do video nowadays. And even the z8 was a little too big for me on trips. I have a couple of friends I travel with, one has the z9 the other the R3. We spend a lot of time in the Atlantic forests in Brazil and the coastal areas. We all have used our gear in pouring rain, in extreme humidity (lens fog can be a bitch!) in extreme wind(this doesn’t sound like a concern until you find yourself in a sandy beach trying to shoot some birds nesting on a beach cliff, and you and your gear are covered in sand due to winds) and never had any issues. I have never used my kit or seen my friends use their gear in snow, so can’t comment on that. Have used it in low temperatures and very cold weather (leave the gear outside in the car don’t bring it inside let it warm up only to take it out later save yourself the headache) Mind you the ftzii adapter is also weather sealed. I was pleased to know since for me it was a concern with a 500prime plus ftzii on the z9 and the z6iii but we sat in pouring rain to capture howler monkeys and we had zero issues. Personally I lean towards the z9 only because there are certain photographers I follow who immerse themselves in even harsher weather conditions Morten Hilmer comes to mind and I have never seen anyone say the z9 failed them!

You'll be happy with either of them and both will perform great. There won't be a crazy IQ difference. I am curious why the A1 isn't on your list as well More on reddit.com

January 29, 2022 - I considered both and went with the Z9. The Canon wins on weight and ergonomics (admittedly a subjective opinion), but Nikon wins on resolution, video, and telephoto lenses in its pipeline. And, yes, lenses need to be taken into consideration.

February 10, 2023 - Another professional opinion about the AF-system in comparison to the R3 + A1 starts @ 5:38min. I like his approach, when he says all 3 bodys are like supercars, so we are talking about differences at the highest level, this should always be kept in mind. Click to expand... This. He's far from being the only one, and the z9 is still a very capable, amazing camera. One has to wonder about Nikon's choices, re: af sensors. Their cameras, approx 275-500 AF sensors. Canon/Sony: 700-1000+ sensors.

I've been shooting for 15+ years, shot for 10 years with Canon 5D Mark III, Nikon D850 since it was first released. I only use 24-70 and 70-200 f/2.8 zooms glass and can careless about primes for my needs.

I am brand agnostic, not a fanboy of either or, I have a lot of experience with both Canon and Nikon.

A few thoughts on current usage:

Huge mpix count of the D850 was something I really was looking forward to when it first came out, but realistically over many years of usage, I don't see any benefits for my personal use. I would be totally fine with lower mpix count but better IQ and ISO noise handling.

Ergonomically I have no preference of Canon or Nikon cameras, I do like newer technology in general and I see that R3 has better EVF and higher resolution screen. Not sure how much actual difference that makes.

I will be using the camera for N/C log video as well, since everyone wants photographers to do videos now, if I was deciding, video would be a 50% factor of the weight of one vs the other.

Lens IQ is a huge factor for me, in fact may be the deciding factor, if RF24-70 was that much better than 24-70 S, i'd get a Canon straight up. And in case it wasn't clear from my original post, I would be selling all my current gear and buying Z9 or R3 with the best Canon or Nikon 24-70 and 70-200 glass for those cameras.

Can anyone with experience of these two make any comments or recommendations?

September 12, 2025 - The a1 does pretty well to beat the Z9 on resolution and low-light ISO, but it’s still well behind the R3. Sony has historically held the lead in the capabilities of its mirrorless autofocus systems, but Canon and Nikon have arguably caught up.

August 21, 2021 - If the Nikon Z9 truly is “a Nikon D6 with a Nikon D850 sensor” then yes, it’s worth $6.5K. Nikon might go as low as, say, $5,999 if they feel they need to be competitive, and make mirrorless a little more attractive. The Canon EOS R3, however, is even more likely to cost less than $6.5K in my opinion.
