I purchased a plug-in hybrid car in October of last year from a NJ dealership and was charged 8% sales tax (I live in NY). I recently learned that clean energy cars are exempt from sales tax (for first $35,000) in NY from Assembly Bill 2021-A4761B.
Am I misunderstanding the Bill or would I not qualify since I bought the car in another state?
If I wasn't supposed to be taxed is there anyway to get my money back or is it too late? If not, who should I contact?
Good Afternoon my beautiful Redditors!
Here seeking knowledge from those smarter than I in the car sales world! I currently live in south jersey and am wanting to buy a car in Delaware to try and avoid that nasty car sales tax. Living so close to Delaware and their 0% car sales tax, can I buy a car in Delaware and somehow avoid paying the NJ Car sales tax?
I was lead to believe it is something I can do, but when speaking with a car salesman, he told me they cannot avoid that. Someone please teach me about this and let me know if this is something that can be done. Cheers!
