There are plenty of hearty native grasses. Then I'd grow woody plants and trees on the periphery. Answer from genman on reddit.com

Suggestions for dog friendly backyard grass options..? Our yard is a MUD PIT
Artificial turf is toxic and wont solve your issue. During the next rain sprinkle put some bags of food gradediatomaceous earth down. It is a fine powder so you will have a cloud when you dump the bags that isn't good to inhale. Wear a mask. It's like lime. It is very absorbent and safe for animals, and kills ticks. Add soil to it. Plant clover. Get sun on it. More on reddit.com

Ideas for a child and dog friendly non-grass backyard in Phoenix
Get turf w/ a cooling infill product (shawgrass has one), that will honestly be the best option. The best new turf products are permeable w/ a white backing, as opposed to the old impermeable black backing. Don’t absorb near as much heat, don’t function in the landscape as a hardscape, and work great (we’re in Vegas). We have had one client swap grass for turf and keep the sod sprinklers in place to quickly cool the grass if it gets too hot. Nobody has complained about backyard turf temps in the 3 years I’ve been working out here. We use SGW / Tiger Turf Sierra Pro Clear Permeable turf. Otherwise, yea, you’re looking at organic mulch, cobblestone deco rock (3/8” river rock), compacted granite fines w/ stabilizer, or a turf alternative like Dwarf Carpet of Stars (StarCarpetLV) or Kurapia. People also ask

Is artificial grass safe for dogs?

Yes, high-quality artificial turf is safe for dogs and may even have some potential health benefits for dogs over real grass (lack of fleas, allergens, toxins, etc.).

In the past, artificial grass often contained harmful chemicals and lead. Most high-quality artificial grass manufacturers have eliminated these from the process. So, if you choose a reputable artificial grass installation company like DFW Turf Solutions, exposure to harmful substances will not be an issue for your family or pets.

Can dogs pee on artificial grass?

Yes, dogs can pee on high-quality artificial grass with good drainage and pooping is also fine — just clear it up quickly afterwards.

Your synthetic turf may hold a urine odor unless you select grass with adequate drainage and do some basic maintenance.

It also reduces the need for other types of yard work, like mowing, and prevents your dog from digging. If you’re installing synthetic turf, expect to pay between $5.50 to $18.75 per square foot. A more durable grass blend: While no grass is completely immune to stains, tougher types like Buffalo Grass or Kentucky Bluegrass withstand urine better.

People With Dogs & No Grass in Back Yard - The eBay Community
April 19, 2014 - Anyway we have been looking at different options from a pet mat, to a patch of artificial grass or taking out some pavers and putting real grass down. Anyone else experienced this problem and what did you do? Ta in advance. (Borrowing hubby's laptop ATM so please be patient if I don't come back right away) ... Icy ! Naughty corner for you! ... Actually Icys idea is good, but take a pooper scooper. Um, all I can suggest, if you can afford it, is to buy expensive dog food, like Science Diet or Advance. Most of the food is utilised so not much comes out the other end, and what does come out doesn't smell poopy

December 11, 2024 - Before you install synthetic grass in your yard as an alternative to grass for dogs, weigh the cost of artificial grass with its pros and cons. Artificial turf, for example, may save gallons of water, but it is questionable whether it is a viable option for a dog-friendly backyard with no grass.

December 11, 2010 - Many people I have spoken to about this have created a small area where they can lay the artificial turf, sometimes in a plastic box so that can have a layer of sand underneath the grass. You could always lay it directly onto the paving slabs as well. The grass is free draining and pet friendly and all the customers with dogs who we have laid it for have no problems.

r/NoLawns on Reddit: No-lawn dog friendly suggestions for 7b?
November 13, 2023 -

Last year I went through the arduous task of removing the several layers of landscape sheeting and old mulch the previous owners had installed in the yard and spread clover seed throughout.

The clover did okay, but it looks almost like it's a 50/50 random grass mix? It definitely isn't, but now I'm beginning to reassess the best option for the yard.

We have two dogs, one is a greyhound who takes the most ungodly elephant sized shits you've ever seen. While house watching for us, my mom ended up ripping up so much of the clover picking up their waste and has suggested doing just a dirt or sand yard (I will not be doing this). We didn't have any issues with poo pick up, but I'm wondering if there are any better and dog-friendlier alternatives?

(No, we can't have one section for the dogs and one no-lawn section. Our yard is very small).

July 16, 2014 - We did that over a section of our yard that is really shady and doesn't like to grow grass. It's also where we have a swing and the kids would drag their feet. We would end up with a giant mud puddle. So we cleared the area and put down turf. It certainly does the trick! ... Looks great! On a side note, Cleveland Ohio? February 6, 2024 - Loose-fill surfacing is made up of small, individual, loose pieces of material, like gravel, wood chips, or sand, and typically requires a bit more long-term maintenance. As dogs run about, the material will naturally become displaced and will eventually need to be replenished, smoothed out, and leveled. Unitary surfacing refers to ground covering that is solid, such as turf, kennel tiles, or natural grass.
