NH-U12A versus NH-U12S; question about RAM clearance
I was able to answer my own question by looking up matching builds on PCPartPicker. There are multiple examples that all show the RAM fitting next to the cooler with zero overhang. This one has the clearest photos I could find: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/xtnLrH (There is also one example in which the cooler does overhang the RAM modules, but it's because the builder rotated the cooler 180 degrees. The cooler is asymmetrical.) I hope this helps in case others have the same question in the future. More on reddit.com

I'm building a new gaming PC and discovered that the Dark Rock Pro 4 cooler is physically incompatible with my RAM modules. I assume the NH-D15 would have the same issue. The RAM modules are 44mm tall. I'm using the TUF Z690-Plus Wifi D4 motherboard and a 12700K CPU.
I'm trying to decide between the NH-U12S and the NH-U12A coolers for this system. I don't plan on overclocking. My main concern is ensuring the cooler can actually physically fit. The RAM modules have RGB so I would prefer to avoid any overhang at all if possible. I would also like to be able to swap out the RAM in a few years without having to mess with the cooler.
Is there any difference in RAM clearance between the U12S and U12A? I see that the U12A is asymmetrical; will it fit without any RAM overhang? If anybody has experience with a similar build I'd really appreciate your input. Thanks!

I have the u12 a chromas and it doesn't cover any of the ram slots at all... Give me 30mins and add a picture edit - cant figure out how to add an image...

There is a minimum clearance between RAM slots and CPU socket that every manufacturer must keep. U12A is designed so it will remain clear of the RAM slots. If in doubt check Noctua's webpage they have a compatibility helper where you can check.

It won’t touch the ram stick by design BUT it’s another story at the rear side. The second fan will “sit” on the VRM heatsink and you need to set it a few mm higher. I hate that so I grab a U12s instead.
