Buffer | Node.js v26.11.1 Documentation
Node.js only supports the little-endian variant of UTF-16. 'latin1': Latin-1 stands for ISO-8859-1. This character encoding only supports the Unicode characters from U+0000 to U+00FF. Each character is encoded using a single byte. Characters that do not fit into that range are truncated and will be mapped to characters in that range. Converting a Buffer into a string using one of the above is referred to as decoding, and converting a string into a Buffer is referred to as encoding.

It's a byte array. From the docs, they represent "a fixed length sequence of bytes". > Buffer.from('test') 74 = ascii 't' 65 = ascii 'e' 73 = ascii 's' 74 = ascii 't' The Japanese word for "test" is a little bit more difficult because it uses UTF-8 characters. > Buffer.from('ใในใ') If you paste the hexidecimal characters into this website's "UTF-8 Code" text box and hit the convert button then you'll see it decoded into the Japanese string.

A NodeJS buffer is essentially a Uint8Array with functions to encode and decode data within the buffer. It allows one read and write binary data into a fixed sized of bytes, with data written at index offsets. It is used for everything from reading/writing byte data to and from a file, to buffering network data, to encoding and decoding raw numeric data.

Node.js - Buffers
An object of buffer class in Node.js used to represent a fixed-length sequence of bytes. It stores raw data similar to an array of integers but corresponds to a raw memory allocation outside the V8 heap.

October 24, 2023 - The Buffer type has been the cornerstone for binary data handling in Node.js since the beginning. However, these days we have Uint8Array, which is a native JavaScript type and works cross-platform. While Buffer is an instance of Uint8Array, it introduces numerous methods that are not available in other JavaScript environments.

May 1, 2020 - A buffer is a space in memory (typically RAM) that stores binary data. In Node.js, we can access these spaces of memory with the built-in Buffer class. Buffers store a sequence of integers, similar to an array in JavaScript.
