We all know that that economy has been quite rough and customers are not spending as much as they normally would. July 9th Nordstrom Anniversary Sale started and we know it wasn’t going to be a great sale because stores didn’t receive as much product as they normally would. Now Nordstrom has cut hours for all employees, some full time employees are getting 24 - 32 hours per week. Employees were only told that hours were being reduced, no answers or concern how employees are going to keep their benefits, pay rent, auto insurance or car payment. Anyone else going through the same thing at their company, and how are you dealing with it?

Unfortunately Nordstrom (and most retailers) doesn’t guarantee hours for anyone other than leadership & salaried employees. It absolutely sucks. Ask your manager if there are any department or racks that need help. And while I know it’s probably not want you want to hear and I hate saying it, if you have PTO you can use that to make up the difference between your scheduled hours and what you need to keep your insurance.

Here’s a long, winded answer. They will do this year after year. Managed there for a while and every year was the same fluctuation. They would, from one day to another, call for us to drastically reduce hours. During peak times, we’d be able to use as many hours as we needed. There is rarely, if ever a notification to employees when hours are about to drop. You can always expect hours to drastically decrease after the anniversary sale, and after holiday. The only thing I can suggest is to learn fulfillment, this might allow you to pick up some extra hours for Web fulfillment. That being said, if you are selling employee for a full line Nordstrom, there’s little to no extra options for you to pick up hours.
