This weeks discussion comes from u/bremen15 who says he lives in Germany and has some friends from the US coming to visit him.
So for this week's discussion, we are going to discuss North American cuisine with US regional cuisine especially in mind. What are the defining dishes of the United States?
Where I'm from (Detroit area) it's the coney dog. An emulsified sausage on a soft bun with chili, onions, and cheese.

Regions can vary substantially, but there are a few things that do stick out: Grilling is either very fast or very slow. America has a pretty long tradition of eating "high-quality" meats very lightly cooked. To the point that the American meat grading system is focused on the ability of a piece of meat to be consumed rare. But there is a stigma against completely raw meat. On the other hand, North America has a very diverse smoking/BBQ culture to the point that there are 5-way arguments over whose approach is best. Slow-cooked pork is very popular, and American preferences for it are somewhat unique. Beans, potatoes, corn, peppers, and tomatoes are all very dominant. Other cultures may have adopted one or two of them and may even have signature dishes using these ingredients, but US (and other American) culinary culture makes use of all of them regularly. EDIT: After posting this, I realized that these are almost all involved in very popular side dishes for the abovementioned BBQ. Americans are great at "Americanizing" other cuisines. Americanized Chinese food is pretty unique. It's certainly nothing like traditional Chinese food. Tex-mex is very different than traditional Mexican food. Creole and Lowcountry cuisine is an American interpretation of traditional African dishes supplemented with Native American.

Title asks about aspects so gonna answer that, because as others have pointed out I don't think any dish is defining for all areas of the US; it's just too big and diverse. What is defining, I think, is flavor. We love flavor, big flavor, the kind of flavor you can't possibly miss or ignore no matter how uncultured your palate because it's the flavor equivalent of whacking someone upside the head with a giant hammer. Often backed up with a lot of fat or grease, because that adds to and enhances the flavor. All the places have different dishes, and we all do variations on other nations dishes, but across all of these we focus on big, bold, inescapably present and dominating flavors. Anything that doesn't have much flavor, or that has a delicate flavor, we are likely to "make better" by adding more or more intense flavors. It's our thing. I came up with this while living in Japan. Japanese food, for the most part, is about isolating and appreciating subtle flavors. And it's amazing. But after a few years, you start craving that American overdose of flavor. Japanese doughnuts are good - but they don't have that pure-sugar airy sweetness of krispy Kreme. Their pizza is delicious and essentially all what we think of as gourmet - but eventually you want a slice with a significant amount of cause, so much cheese you have to worry about it sliding off, covered in meat, that leaves pools of grease anywhere you set down a slice. Sushi? yeah fish is great, and it's good on rice dipped lightly in sushi with a little wasabi, but this is America. So we jazz it all up by rolling multiple kinds of fish and other flavorful items into a roll of rice, including extra wasabi while dipping deeply in soy sauce and while we're at it half the time we include a slice of ginger in our bite instead of using it to cleanse our palate between types of fish. Flavor hammer. (Note: I am not endorsing this sort of behavior, but you do see this all across America). The first thing I had at a restaurant when I moved back was a burger where the buns were bacon grilled cheese's and the toppings included a fried egg, Goetta (think grilled breakfast sausage), and more cheese. Do I eat like this normally? No. Would I choose something like is as a daily meal? No, and I frequently miss eating cold soba for lunch and sushi for dinner. But it was the perfect, soul-satisfying, welcome home to America meal. Because flavor hammer.
