DFW/TX - Annual lawn care plan
Here's my schedule that I've lived by for 15 years without fail (DFW): Early Spring: Liquid Pre-emergent Mid-Spring: Broadcast insect killer because I hate ants and grubs Mid-Spring: Broadcast Feed (no weed and feed, just 15-5-10) Summer: Broadcast Ironite (if you want it greener)' Early Fall: Liquid Pre-emergent I might throw in another fertilizer application in late summer, early fall if needed, but for the most part, if it looks healthy, you don't really need much. A couple of years ago I had some nutsedge infestation (I blame lawn guys I had hired because I'd never had nutsedge before and applied Image 2x which knocked it out fast). Pull weeds manually as you see them. Mow weekly. I've had a nearly weed-free and green lawn since then. More on reddit.com

3-1-2 Fertilizer for Lawn North Texas
You’re not supposed to regularly put phosphorous on lawns (middle number) because it causes runoff pollution issues. It’s not consumed/released into air like nitrogen is, so you don’t need to keep adding it forever. Of the various products marketed for grass, only lawn starter fertilizer generally has a meaningful amount of P in it. (Landscaping and food gardens have different NPK requirements.) If your soil test says you need P, it is ok to use a fertilizer with P one time to make up the shortfall. Then switch back to a XX-0-Y type lawn fertilizer for regular feedings. More on reddit.com

When to Fertilize Your Lawn in Texas: A Seasonal Guide for Healthy Grass | The Grass Outlet
April 29, 2025 - Summer heat hits central Texas hard. Unless your lawn shows serious deficiency symptoms, you should consider skipping summer fertilization entirely. Fall applications work best by mid-October. The warmer Gulf Coast region, including Houston and Corpus Christi, permits early spring fertilization by early March. The extended growing season may require additional feeding cycles compared to northern parts of the state.

r/lawncare on Reddit: DFW/TX - Annual lawn care plan
February 9, 2022 -

Hello, in the past, I've used a lawn care service for taking care of my yard (under 5000 sq ft, bermuda grass). This year, I decided to try it out myself - how good is Scott's 4 step program? https://program.scotts.com/

For my yard, it recommends

  1. Early spring - Scotts Turf Builder Southern Lawn Food (in april - so not a pre-emergent!)

  2. Late Spring - Scotts Turf Builder Thick'R Lawn Bermudagrass (May-June)

  3. Early summer - Scotts Turf Builder Summerguard Lawn Food with Insect Control (July)

  4. Fall - Scotts Turf Builder Weed & Feed (Late Aug)

Does this make sense? or would you recommend a different plan?

Thanks!

The Best Times To Fertilize Your Lawn in North Texas (Without Harming The Environment) — Golub Green
June 25, 2025 - Your lawn has different nutritional needs throughout the year. Applying fertilizer at the right moments gives grass the strength to grow, repair, and defend itself from heat, pests, and disease. ... But when applied at the wrong time—or too often—fertilizer can wash away before it’s absorbed, leading to pollution in local water systems and wasted product. That’s why it’s important to follow a schedule that works with the North Texas climate and your specific grass type.
