May feel too static if one expect classics to be reinvented, but Eggers crude gothic obsessions reaffirms Orlok as the original cinematic vampyr. [Full review in Spanish] ... Overwrought and overthought, Robert Eggers’ cerebral creepfest Nosferatu forsakes hair-raising and spine-tingling for carefully curated arthouse-homage spooks.

December 27, 2024 -

saw nosferatu tonight and i'm not even close to a regular movie critic, but i don't know if i've ever seen a worse movie. i walked out of the theater with my mind absolutely blown, (and possibly destroyed). how did this even make it to theaters, and even more importantly, how does this movie have 87% on rotten tomatoes?? it was disgusting to say the least. wish i could bleach my eyes and my brain.

spoiler alert

edit: i will say that i had pretty much no problem with it until she's possessed and says something about her husband not being able to please her like the vampire could, and then in what seems like an attempt to prove a point, they start aggressively banging? like...who had that idea? at that point the whole movie was pretty much ruined for me, and then it somehow managed to get worse as the movie went on, which ruined it even further. i do think that it started off strange, alluding to her as a child allowing this vampire to come into her soul or whatever, it's pretty weird. but up until that specific scene, and the many ones that would soon follow, having any chance of liking this movie was gone for me.

February 29, 2024 - Interesting that on Letterboxd there are a lot more timid reviews coming in. Lots of 2 out 5’s. This will probably be be like his other films where it’s divisive. ... Letterboxd has an annoying amount of casual audience members but the average rating will likely go up once it's out ... Haven’t seen any of his films, but have been interested. Nosferatu looked incredible regardless.

r/RedLetterMedia on Reddit: Their review for "Nosferatu" is terrible and I love it
February 3, 2024 -

Now, hear me out: It is a pretty bad review. Most of it is spent on riffing on idiots who leave reviews, the movie going experience and people who expected a gore-fest. The rest is mainly talking about the Coppola-"Dracula", Robert Eggers other movies (so not this one) and roughly sketching out the barest of outlines for a movie review. And those are, in my opinion, a bit of a jumbled mess of talking about specific details they found interesting or tidbits of historical context.

After seeing the movie myself I love this. Because there's not much more to say than what they start and end with: It's a beautiful movie, go see it.

Nosferatu - 8/10. Add this film into the list of movies this year which I heard overwhelming positive reviews before watching it, and then being a little bit disappointed after watching it (Longlegs and Anora just to name a few). Nosferatu is a director on his A game. Robert Eggers’ really put in a lot of work here, whether it be the outstanding visuals (loved the black and white esque tones during the night scenes and the framing work here), the world building (you’re really put into the world from the first moment), and the transformative performances. Lily Rose Depp is a revelation here (I still can’t believe this is the same person from The Idol). She really is the heart and soul here, and does an insanely great job of selling to you that her character is going through this horrible ordeal. Hoult puts in another great performance this year, and Skarsgard once again does a good job playing an iconic character. So, my critiques of this film was that it felt more folk tale than vampire film. Ironic that for a vampire movie, surprisingly, there’s not as much vampire moments as I would’ve thought. In comparison to Bram Stoker’s Dracula (which I loved), this felt a little more visual based (nothing wrong with that though). I felt like Copolla's Dracula was rich with atmosphere, but blended it with a compelling gothic romance that upheld its vampire lore. Whereas here, I feel like the atmosphere and visuals took precedent, and that I felt the performances were in a decent but not amazing story (again, maybe its cause I’ve seen a lot of vampire stories, so maybe that’s why this felt a little less vampire than I hoped). Also: Nosferatu’s character design was a little disappointing. I wasn’t really frightened by his look, in fact, I was a little distracted because it felt like they just made a ghoulish Robotnik from Sonic. This doesn’t mean that the movie is bad by any stretch of the manner though, I still was thoroughly impressed and entertained. I just felt I wanted a little more from the movie, and with the prerelease buzz for the movie, I was expecting something more along the lines of the ‘92 Dracula. But I digress, even with the flaws I saw, this is still a technically brilliant film, and a solid performance based one at that!

r/horror on Reddit: Nosferatu is the biggest disappointment of the year
December 29, 2024 -

Eggers Nosferatu is pure atmosphere with very little to no nuance in its retelling. I honestly thought it was kind of a mess. It looks unbelievable though. Really cool use of light and shadows. With that being said, Nosferatu is Eggers first miss in my opinion.

A testament to the fact that stunning cinematography, production design and a solid ensemble are not enough to make a great film.

Although if you liked a movie like longlegs which many of you seem to have enjoyed, you will probably absolutely love this.

For a movie that originally had no dialogue, this one is filled with nothing but people expositorily talking in dark rooms for scenes that drag on for way too long. Didnt find it thought provoking or suspenseful whatsoever. I think the biggest issue was the fact that none of these characters had any sort of personality or were interesting/dynamic at all which made it tough to become truly invested. They merely feel like props rather than lived in characters. The elements that excite are spaced out between… “fine” or "meh" moments. i repeat, shot beautifully, but just like… cool, what are we doing here and why do we care about these people?

Theres no doubt that Eggers is an absolute craftsmen and a wildly talented auteur, but this one just felt incredibly stiff and hollow. Not a bad movie by any means, but surely a disappointment at least in my eyes having been quite pumped for it since it was announced. Just a wonderfully shot nothing burger of a remake. Of course, this is all just my opinion. try not to crucify me.
