That said, what the film lacks in outright scares it more than makes up for in eerie atmosphere, with the CGI-free, in-camera effects developed by Coppola and his son Roman lending the proceedings the unreal air of a vivid fever dream.

Yeah I know. My wife can’t handle horror or gore or generally “scary” movies at all. She can watch stuff like Lost Boys and The Shining, but that’s it. I’m trying to watch some atmospheric stuff with her this fall but I’m at a loss. She watched the first 2/3 of House Of The Devil last year, but had to stop once things actually got going. Any recommendations for movies with that vibe?

The Fog (1980). My personal favorite John Carpenter movie (please don’t argue with me). The movie is 100% atmosphere with very few jump scenes and while the climax is more action packed than the rest of the film, it’s not very scary. Overall this is just a great atmospheric movie about a haunted town.
