I’ll be going back to school in a few weeks. Some of my classes will be in person, while others will be remote. I want to leverage technology for note-taking and am exploring different workflows and app options.
I’m considering two approaches:
1. Recording classes and then using AI to transcribe the audio. 2. Using AI to transcribe the class in real time.
Although the first option involves an extra step, I believe it’s the more reliable choice. There’s less chance of technical issues than with live transcription, and having the original audio allows me to cross-check for accuracy if needed.
Here’s the workflow and app selection I’m considering:
1. Record live classes (or system audio for remote classes) using [Audio Hijack](https://rogueamoeba.com/audiohijack/). 2. Use [MacWhisper](https://goodsnooze.gumroad.com/l/macwhisper?layout=profile) to transcribe the audio. 3. Import the transcription into [Obsidian](https://obsidian.md/download), where AI plugins can summarize and format the notes.
I might also look into automation tools to streamline the whole process.
Does this workflow seem efficient? Do the app choices look solid? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

If you want to learn something, take down notes on your own. You need to learn how to distinguish the important details from the less important. This is a process and it needs to be frustrating in the beginning! If you have questions during class, ask your teacher/prof, not the AI. Would you like lively class discussions or prefer silent students sitting behind their Macs recording everything, and never speaking up for fear of being recorded? Take handwritten notes if possible (better for memory) and type them down later into your device. This way you will have engaged with the content twice. If you record and just press summarise you will learn almost nothing.

I've been doing this kind of workflow for over a year now. Exact set of software, but I have custom-built software for the latter. Audio Hijack is great. You can have a flow like this Video Call App (exclude audio input) -> Output (Default System Output) -> Recorder 1 Input device -> Recorder 2 so you have two streams for both the call and your own voice. MacWhisper I use the Transcribe Podcast feature and use both files, so that my input is treated separately from the call. Sometimes, I exclude my own recording if the session is like a lecture or one-way. I export my transcripts to .whisper format and txt or csv Transcription Processing This is up to you. Obsidian is great, but I recommend having a series of prompts to clean things up or at least have a template for it for consistent processing.

I'm a university student, and to be frank, I'm terrible when it comes to writing down notes, in ill just copy slides word for word, or record the lecture and take decent notes but it takes me 4 hours to do so for an hour and a half lecture. So I was thinking about using one of those AI notetakers (turbolearn) tools to make my notes, and then I can write them down to understand them more. But I am looking for other people's opinions what is the best way to use an AI notetaker without making it make you become lazy and use it to help you.

I highly suggest these two. RambleFix.com - Automatic notes from voice input. TalkText.io - For writing anywhere with voice. I use their Mac integration (has a web version too) to speak long prompts for Cursor and ChatGPT. And just in general too, for writing emails/messages, etc. I think I remember reading RambleFix uses Google's latest model under the hood, so you'll probably see a better result than GPT-4.
