Try XML Tools. Plugins -> XML Tools -> Pretty Print (libXML) or (XML only - with line breaks Ctrl + Alt + Shift + B)

You may need to install XML Tools using your plugin manager in order to get this option in your menu.

In my experience, libXML gives nice output but only if the file is 100% correctly formed.

Pretty print for XML tools not working.
I can give you this advice, at least: without some basic information, it is unlikely that anyone will be able to help you. Click on the question mark that is the last entry on the menu bar and select Debug Info...; then Copy debug info to clipboard. Paste that, either as an edit at the end of your original post or as a comment. That will give us somewhere to start. I can’t promise anyone will have an answer, but I don’t see any recent posts in the community forum or the XMLTools issues regarding pretty print, so there is probably something unusual about your configuration. r/notepadplusplus on Reddit: Pretty print for XML tools not working.
June 2, 2026 -

I am using xml tools pretty print to format xml files for testing. I have used it before with no issues. When I use pretty print it does nothing. No error message, nothing.

I have checked the file contains no errors, I have had a college run the file and it worked for them. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Notepad++ and the plugins. I'm at my wits end. Does anyone have any advice?
