A few months back I asked for advice on mattress toppers (here), and benefited from the expertise and wisdom of several members of the community. Thanks again for all your help! I wanted to try to give back by providing an update on what I tried & where I landed, in case it was helpful to anyone.
I ended up trying 3 mattress toppers on my bed for several nights to several weeks. Spoiler alert: I ended up with the Novaform ComfortLuxe.
I tried the Tempurpedic Supreme first, after finding I could try it out from Amazon but still be able to return it with the return policy. BOY was I glad I had that option! This mattress topper felt like sleeping on a Laffy Taffy. It was hard as a brick* when you first laid on it, and then it would start to loosen up in the area immediately surrounding my body. But if I needed to turn over or adjust, it was crazy -- I had to physically fling myself and throw down hard to be able to settle into a new position. My husband felt the same. It was interesting when you had sunk in enough, I will say it felt supportive. But overall this was not at ALL what we were looking for. *I definitely prefer a softer experience so take this with a grain of salt please.
I tried the Tempurpedic cooling topper as well, also with a return option. This was much better than the supreme (for our tastes). I was so excited when I first took it out because it felt soft, giving, and plush, just what I was hoping for. Weirdly though, by the time it was in the cover and under my sheets, it did not feel that soft or plush -- the cover muted much of the feel. So, after a few nights of trying that out (meh -- not bad, but not what I had hoped), I removed the cover to see if that helped the plushness come through. It helped -- but was still not very plush, and I didn't relish the idea of having spent a bucket of money (it was $$$$$) on a topper only to remove one of the main selling points. I decided to try another topper (below) to decide whether it was worth the huge upgrade in price.....
So, I decided to try the Novaform ComfortLuxe from Costco. This was so much cheaper than the tempurpedics (it was under $200 vs. ~$500-600 at the time I purchased). It has turned out to be remarkably comfortable. The cover is not as fancy or luxurious as the tempurpedics, but it totally does the job. It is more comfortable than either of the tempurpedics -- meaning soft and plush (what I was looking for). I am really very happy. And, after trying this one, I decided there was no way it was worth the high markup for the tempur cooling topper, esp since this was ultimately more comfortable.
Based on what I have read from others, I must really be on the soft side of the spectrum for finding the tempurpedic supreme unappealingly hard, so please take my comments above in that light. But, for someone looking for a soft, plush mattress topper, I highly recommend checking out the ComfortLuxe. We have apparently been sleeping on it for around 6 months (how time flies), and it's just as comfortable as ever -- no apparent wear, dips, impressions, etc. (Plus, you have Costco's guarantee if it goes wrong.)
Happy to answer any questions.
I desperately need a mattress topper for my too-firm mattress.
The Novaform mattress toppers seem to have a lot of good reviews, but all the recent reviews seem to indicate that they aren't as good as they used to be. Maybe it's a post-Covid supply chain issue?
Either way, if you have a Costco mattress topper and love it, let me know! Thanks!

I recently purchased the Novaform Legacy Premier (Queen) from Costco and am now reading that it’s super firm—like overly firm. I generally lean toward medium-firm mattresses despite being tall, skinny, and bony (6’0”, 150 lbs). Now I’m wondering if I made a mistake or if I should just grab a topper to soften it up.
I’ve always heard you can make a firm bed softer but not the other way around, so I’m hoping I can tweak it if needed. Given my situation: • Mild scoliosis, anterior pelvic tilt, and forward neck posture • Side sleeper, but sometimes sleep elevated on my back for acid reflux • Prefer some cushion but not too plush/sinky
What’s a solid mattress topper that can add some softness while still keeping good support? Would love recommendations that work well for pressure relief on hips/shoulders while keeping my spine aligned.
Anyone else try this mattress? How firm are we talking?
I've always slept on relatively cheap mattresses (Tuft and Needle, Sealy, Lucid) and never had any problems other than the fact that they all started sagging after about a year. (Well, except the Tuft and Needle, but I just checked and their prices are actually a lot higher now than they used to be.)
Anyway, felt like I was due for an upgrade and went for a little more expensive mattress - the aforementioned Novaform. Holy crap. I've never had such bad back pain in my life. I've actually never had any back pain whatsoever until this. I'm just shocked. After multiple days of back pain, I actually had to sleep on a floor in my sleeping bag last night. Best sleep I've had since getting the mattress. No pain whatsoever.
Apparently, a lot of people like it, though. It has great reviews. I guess I'm just a weirdo. Also, given the fact that this mattress has so much give, I feel like it's probably more suited for side sleepers whereas I'm primarily a back sleeper.
Very thankful for Costco's great return policy. Gonna try the Casper Memory Foam now because I guess I've had great experiences with memory foam mattresses in the past.
A year or so ago we bought a Big Fig since I am a heavier person and it was recommended everywhere.. it is way too firm, I am a stomach sleeper(but I rotate through all positions and sometimes sleep on my side or back) and it really supports for that, but I have fibro, hypemobility(eds)and find awful pressure points with my lower back, sides, ribcage and sides of my thighs.
I have been researching and buying toppers for the past year and nothing relieves my pain and we can't afford a new bed or return the big fig.
Soo.. I really would appreciate some advice on this. From reading around reddit/other forums I have figured out that we probably need 2-3 inches of a high density foam. I prefer that it very firmly cradles/supports, but I keep finding the ones we buy sink right to the hard mattress causing hammocking and I wake up barely able to walk.
I have tried latex, talalay and Dunlop, natural and the cheaper synthetics, from softest to firmest, from 2 inch to 3 inch and hate how bouncy it is. We recently bought a temperapedic topper from Costco and for about 2 days it was heaven, but it finished expanding and was like air mush right to mattress. Also, if it helps, we recently tried a Purple hybrid 2 and it was PERFECT, supportive and soft at the same time for me...but not worth 4k and I have read enough horror stories.
Okay, phew.. novel. I really hope someone can help, I am so tired of being in pain and sending back toppers that suck is becoming frustrating. 😬
My wife and I are purchasing a new bed this year and are going up to a king size. After looking at the Wire Cutter and other trusted review websites, it looks like this Costco-only mattress is highly regarded. Better yet, it's on a great sale and we can get it for less than $500.
Does anyone here have one? Any thoughts on why or why not we should get one?
We are both side sleepers and don't like a mattress that's too soft or too firm.
Recently brought a EGOHOME 12 Inch copper gel memory foam and while it's definitely comfortable compared to my previous and sagging interspring, it's just a bit hard to sleep on because I have super bony hips and a side sleeper so it's just a bit hard to sleep on. My fellow bonies have any recommendations, thanks.
I wanna buy a Costco mattress to last me 2 years before I (hopefully) upgrade to a real, expensive mattress.
I did some research and it seems that most people recommend these two brands. Specifically, the Novaform Comfort Grande vs the S&F Kirkland Lakeridge.
What are your experiences with the two mattresses or the two brands? I saw a lot of people praising S&F, but I also saw someone say that their quality went downhill in recent years when they got bought out by Sealy.
I sleep exclusively on my side. I don't have back pain or anything. I'm 30yo, 6'1 and about 190 lbs. I have no idea if I prefer memory foam or springs or whatever. I'm probably gonna aim for either a medium or a slightly soft mattress (though I'm getting a $200 tempur-pedic mattress topper which should be good at making a firm mattress more comfortable).
I bought the novaform mattress and have tried it for two days now. Its a bit too firm and hoping it will get more comfortable. Does it take some time? Anyone experience this? Thanks
I recently purchased a new mattress that’s way too hard. I came to Reddit to look for topper recommendations and saw the Novaform ComfortLuxe was recommended. It arrived yesterday and I’m returning it today. I could not sleep on it and I’m baffled by the good reviews. When I first laid on it I felt like I was collapsing into a hole. No support whatsoever. I’m spite of being so soft I still sank to the bottom of it (I’m 140lbs) totally defeating the purpose because I could still feel my hard bed underneath putting pressure on my hip and shoulder.
I ordered a latex topper. I’m hoping this feels better.
And just to show how useless all these mattress reviews are, my boyfriend loves the new mattress that I can’t even drift off to sleep on bc I’m in so much pain.
Edit: I’ve tried the latex topper and that too really didn’t help. I’m going to have to exchange my mattress.
I got the queen the other day for 499 USD and while it seems nice, it's like a bit deformed....e.g. sticking up at the ends and sinksmsagging in the middle in a concave fashion(as if it was rolled, which it was lol). It's been about 28 hours of it being outside the packaging and the manual says it needs 24 hours but I read memory foam usually needs 72 hours? Should I wait another day or consider exchanging it :(?
also another user said novaform was on sale in warehouse and a king was 479 so a queen(my model) mustve been cheaper...while that sucks I missed it, costco.com said the novaform sale was until 11/24 and when I went into my warehouse it was standard price. Do warehouses each have their own sales separate from each other and/or from costco.com as well?
Thanks.
I don't think I bought what you have, I bought a new topper a few months ago. But, I did notice for mine, that the price went down a few days after I bought it. I found on the costco.com site you can fill out a form for a price adjustment. I did it, and got the amount including the sales tax associated with it.
Not sure about how long your mattress needs to fully expand, I would wait the full amount of time. You can also read reviews on costco.com on it I'm sure. While you're waiting, just look for that price adjustment form and get that going. If you return it later, you can figure that out then. Good luck!
Our Novaform is amazing. We slept on it the same night, within a couple of hours of opening the package. Sounds like yours is defective. If you like the price of the novaform, I'd recommend getting a replacement.
I know Costco doesn't own Novaform but they do sell them and they have very good reviews...they are much, much less expensive. I've done a lot of reading and many say the cost of Tempurpedic's is outrageous. Should I spend $3K for a bed that I can get very close to for $600?
I've never bought a mattress, I'm terrified to spend so much money. Has anybody from Reddit looked into this deeper than I have? Thanks!!
There was an unusually popular AMA from a mattress salesman a few months ago. There were lots of questions about memory foam. We bought a new mattress with his advice:
Branding is meaningless. What matters when it comes to memory foam is the density, thickness, layering, presence of cooling gel, and price.
Memory foam mattresses are not memory foam all the way through. There will be a layer of memory foam on top and then 1-3 base layers of regular foam underneath for stability. To a point, a thicker layer of memory foam on top is better.
Memory foam density is measured in lbs (one cubic foot of memory foam weighs x lbs). I've seen from 4lbs to 8lbs. The higher density feels harder at first but contours to your body as you sink into it for a "firm but soft" feeling and better durability.
We paid $700 for a king-sized, 8" thick with 3" of 7.5lb memory foam, with cooling gel from Value City Furniture. We took an entire day and went to 10 different mattress stores in our area and that was BY FAR the best deal.
We've had it for about 6 months now and love it. We haven't had any of the "breathing" or too-hot problems that others here have mentioned.
Best mattress I have ever owned and I have had it about 7 years now. Excellent purchase an 1/4 the price.
Hi all.
We're shopping around for a new mattress to keep at my parents place for when we stay over. The current mattress we sleep on is VERY old and VERY uncomfortable so just about anything would be an upgrade honestly... anyway... I came across the Novaform 14" ComfortGrande Plus Gel Memory Foam Mattress (Link) and it seems to fit our needs and budget. Anyone have experience with this exact mattress or with the brand? Also, are mattress prices typically lower in store vs online?
last question, does anyone here know if Costco will pickup an old mattress if I were to buy a new one in store? I live in CA and supposedly by law they have to take old mattresses away when the new one is delivered. I'm curious if this also applies to in store purchases. TIA!
