Null hypothesis - Wikipedia
3 weeks ago - {\textstyle H_{0}} ) is the claim in scientific research that the effect being studied does not exist. The null hypothesis can also be described as the hypothesis in which no relationship exists between two sets of data or variables being analyzed. If the null hypothesis is true, any experimentally ...

[Q] Question about choosing null and alternative hypotheses
The null is ALWAYS the opposite of what you want to prove. It is related to modus tollens. If A then B and Not B therefore not A. More on reddit.com
How do I frame null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis here?
In words: H0: Group A and Group B have equal life satisfaction HA: Group A and Group B have different life satisfaction Which I would translate as H0: meanA = meanB HA: meanB =/= meanB So you'd have to find the CI for each group and see if they overlap. It's been a while (25 years) since I've done this kind of thing, so I might be wrong, but I don't think I am. edit: typo in HA! More on reddit.com
The symbolic representation of a null hypothesis....why use mu instead of X-bar?
Fundamental Point of Statistics #1: If you learn nothing else, learn this: A parameter is a characteristic of the population. It is not random. We use greek letters (like mu) for this. A statistic is a characteristic of a sample. It is random -- a different sample will yield a different sample mean. We use roman letters for these (like X-bar -- the bar is used to identify the particular statistics it is -- an arithmetic mean). In inference, you are inferring about the population parameter by using the sample statistic. H0: X-bar = 0 is meaningless if X-bar is 0.4 -- this is clearly not zero. But you wouldn't expect X-bar to be exactly zero from a sample any more than you would always expect that 10 coin tosses will always give you 5 heads and 5 tails. The question to be answered (one question) is: IF the population mean were zero, is it reasonable to expect the sample mean to differ by as much as 0.4? If it is not reasonable (given the variability) then we "decide" to act as though the population mean is not zero. More on reddit.com
Why is the null hypothesis important?
The importance of the null hypothesis is that it provides an approximate description of the phenomena of the given data. It allows the investigators to directly test the relational statement in a research study.

What symbols are used to represent null hypotheses?
The null hypothesis is often abbreviated as H0. When the null hypothesis is written using mathematical symbols, it always includes an equality symbol (usually =, but sometimes ≥ or ≤).
