Null Island Is One of the Most Visited Places on Earth. Too Bad It Doesn't Exist
August 7, 2025 - We end up with an island of misfit data. The zero latitude, zero longitude location of “Null Island”-fame is based on the World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84), a commonly-used global reference system for modeling the Earth that is the standard for the Department of Defense and the Global Positioning System (GPS).

Null Island / Myst Island
I knew about the 'existence' of null island (after a stint of researching phantom islands a few years ago), but had no idea that people had been using Myst island's layout as a stand-in for it. Sure enough, if you do an image search for 'null island' there's a lot of landforms that are obvious recreations of Myst island, and even a few images of Myst island itself. When you think about it, it's fitting that Myst island should become Earth's own ' Great Zero '. More on reddit.com

Null Island - Wikipedia
2 days ago - Natural Earth describes the entity as a "1 meter square island" (11 sq ft) with "scale rank 100, indicating it should never be shown in mapping". The name "Null" refers to the two zero coordinates, as null values (indicating an absence of data) are often coerced to a value of 0 when converted to an integer context or "no-nulls allowed" context.

The Many Lives of Null Island - Stamen Design
August 9, 2024 - It is an imaginary island located at a real place: the coordinates of 0º latitude and 0º longitude, a location in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa where the Prime Meridian meets the Equator, hundreds of miles from any real dry land. Null Island is not just a silly place to think about when cartographers are bored, it is a phenomenon that repeatedly and annoyingly asserts itself in the middle of day-to-day cartographic work, often when you least expect it.

The Republic of Null Island
Instead of micro ‐society, of heterotopia, Null Iceland is precisely the absence of people and the social system they represent – its nature is that of a void. The art installation also works as a hidden GPS Antenna to transmite a generated GPS singal with the coordinate 0°N 0°E, to virtually place the visitors smartphones at the Null Island.

A deep dive into Null Island. "Null Island is a long-running inside joke among cartographers. It is an imaginary island located at a real place: the coordinates of 0° latitude and 0° longitude." Its shape is a reference to the video game Myst.

Welcome to Null Island, The Most 'Visited' Place on Earth That Doesn't Actually Exist : ScienceAlert
May 11, 2016 - If you were to list off a few of the world's most popular places, you'd probably name something like Stonehenge or the Great Pyramids. After all, these historic structures attract millions of people every year and they have one thing in common: they actually exist. Sure, existing seems like a prerequisite for any 'place', but it actually isn't, because one of the most 'visited' sites on Earth is an imaginary place called Null Island, located at 0°N 0°E on the map in the South Atlantic Ocean, thanks to researchers making errors while working with various geographic information systems (GIS).

Null Island: The Fictional Place Created by Digital Mapping Error | Amusing Planet
December 11, 2023 - A properly designed software will identify the values as invalid and ignore them, but badly written ones will map them to this lonely spot hundreds of miles from the shores of Africa. Because there are scores of badly written software using map data, an unbelievably large number of addresses get mapped to this fictional place called “Null Island” out in the Atlantic.
