July 24, 2026 - Because Null is not a data value, ... absent value, using mathematical operators on Null gives an unknown result, which is represented by Null. In the following example, multiplying 10 by Null results in Null: ... This can lead to unanticipated results. What are pros and cons of using NULLS vs NOTNULLs in database?
Pros of using NULL: When your column can be NULL, NULL is a perfect fit. Pros of using NOTNULL: When your column cannot be NULL, NOTNULL is a perfect fit. Cons of using NULL: When your column cannot be NULL, NOTNULL would be a better fit. Cons of using NOTNULL: When your column can be NULL, NULL would be a better fit. More on reddit.com

Is using `blank=True, null=True` a lot considered to be a bad practice?
No, in fact it's (more or less) required on any new columns added to an existing table to ensure backwards compat during migrations. More on reddit.com

When are nulls "safe"?
I'm not sure I understand how NULL values would interfere with normalizing your data layout. If you have some column that is sometimes used, but not always, then you should allow NULLs. More on reddit.com

Should I allow values to be null? Or simply create more tables?
Could you use schema B with a FULL OUTER JOIN to get all info in one place which if I understand your example would make the table in schema A. NULL should be be used for unknown values and can cause arithmetic problems (although aggregations handle NULL) 1 + NULL = NULL as 1 + Unknown = Unknown If you need to do arithmetic operations over columns and the record contains a NULL in field used in the operation the result will be NULL, which can cause beaches. My preference is to normalise the data as much as possible as it means changes can be made in one place i.e. description of a dimension field can be changed once rather than having to make changes in all transactional records. This however makes queries more complex, but I tend to use Power BI or Qlik to deal with displaying results and visualisations and these handle normalised data very well. More on reddit.com

SQL NULL Values - IS NULL and IS NOT NULL
It is not possible to test for NULL values with comparison operators, such as =, <, or <>. We will have to use the IS NULL and IS NOT NULL operators instead. SELECT column_names FROM table_name WHERE column_name IS NULL; SELECT column_names FROM table_name WHERE column_name IS NOT NULL; Below is a selection from the Customers table used in the examples:

September 15, 2021 - Use the IS NULL or IS NOT NULL predicate to test for a null value. This can add complexity to the WHERE clause. For example, the TerritoryID column in the AdventureWorks Customer table allows null values.

Null Values in Relational Database (Purpose)
Consider, for example, what happens if you have an employees’ relation that contains a column for salary. Assume that the salary is null for some portion of the rows. Question: What, then, should happen if someone queries the table for all people who make more than $60,000 a year? Should the rows with null be retrieved, or should they be left out? When the DBMS evaluates a null against the logical criterion of salary value greater than 60,000, it cannot determine whether the row containing the null meets the criteria.

March 3, 2020 - When writing queries, there are times that you'll want to filter out rows with NULL values. Other times, you'll specifically want to retrieve rows that contain NULLs. Here's how to do both: Queries can filter out nulls using the IS NOT NULL clause. Here's an example that excludes films from the Sakila database that contain a NULL original_language_id:

Let me show a couple of examples. Imagine that a table has 3 rows, and the column `quantity` has the following values: 1, 2, NULL. What will be the result of `AVG(quantity)`? It will be 1.5. And the result of `MAX(quantity)` is 2. This makes perfect sense if you consider NULL as “no value”, and sounds quite idiotic otherwise. Now, what if you run a SELECT with `WHERE quantity =NULL OR quantity <> NULL`? You will not get any row. Assuming that the DBMS ...
