Is that really weirder than “eleven” and “twelve” being their own words, but then suddenly the pattern changes and you start adding “-teen” to the number? Which by the way, the -teen ending etymologically means “10”, so “seventeen” is basically a literal translation of “dix-sept”. But if you think that’s weird, wait till you get to 70, 80 and 90.
