Iterating over arrays — NumPy v2.5 Manual
The iterator object nditer, introduced in NumPy 1.6, provides many flexible ways to visit all the elements of one or more arrays in a systematic fashion. This page introduces some basic ways to use the object for computations on arrays in Python, then concludes with how one can accelerate the ...
Array objects
NumPy provides an N-dimensional array type, the ndarray, which describes a collection of “items” of the same type. The items can be indexed using for example N integers · All ndarrays are homogeneous: every item takes up the same size block of memory, and all blocks are interpreted in ...
Data type objects (dtype)
A data type object (an instance of numpy.dtype class) describes how the bytes in the fixed-size block of memory corresponding to an array item should be interpreted. It describes the following aspects of the data: · Type of the data (integer, float, Python object, etc.)
The N-dimensional array (ndarray)
An ndarray is a (usually fixed-size) multidimensional container of items of the same type and size. The number of dimensions and items in an array is defined by its shape, which is a tuple of N non-negative integers that specify the sizes of each dimension. The type of items in the array is ...
Datetimes and timedeltas
Starting in NumPy 1.7, there are core array data types which natively support datetime functionality. The data type is called datetime64, so named because datetime is already taken by the Python standard library · Similar to the Python date class, dates are expressed in the current Gregorian ...

By default, the nditer uses the flags ‘allocate’ and ‘writeonly’ for operands that are passed in as None. This means we were able to provide just the two operands to the iterator, and it handled the rest. However, “None” is full of junk in the beginning! import numpy as np a = np.arange(10, 19).reshape(3, 3) print(a) print() with np.nditer([a, None]) as iterator: for x, y in iterator: y[...] += x**2 out_1 = iterator.operands[0] out_2 = iterator.operands[1] print(out_1) print() print(out_2)
