While the lower anchors in the vehicles are mandated to be a specific size and width apart, they are not mandated to be in a specific location in the vehicle seat. The lower anchors do not need to be used if there is a difficulty using them – instead, install with the seat belt. Review both the vehicle’s and car seat’s instruction manuals to ensure the seat can be installed in the location where you want to use the lower anchors.

My wife and I are expecting our first baby this August, so we’ve been checking out infant car seats. She really liked the Nuna Pipa infant car seat, so we went to a local store to test-fit the base in our car.
After several tries, we couldn’t get the latches to reach the metal bars in the back seat to lock in place. Later, I came across a Model Y group thread mentioning that the latches can be extended—but now I’m not sure if we had already extended them when we tried.
Has anyone successfully installed this car seat in a C40? Any tips?

Yep. Remove the plastic anchor guides/protectors in the seat and then it's possible to get them in there. Volvo buried the anchors too deep and at a weird angle.

In that thread they mention eventually using force. It may take 5 minutes instead of 5 seconds but try hard enough and it will latch. I feel like most smaller SUVs / CUVs are like that these days which is super annoying. On the bright side you only really do it once until you replace it

I have the nuna pipa lite car seat that requires a base for installation. We currently have the seatbelt installation AND the LATCH system (which they call UAS) set up. Both at once.
On the manual it says “It is acceptable to install with both UAS (lower attachments) and the vehicle belt.”
Now my question is: can I install the base using the seatbelt only?
[edit: in my opinion, the manual implies it’s okay to use both systems but it’s not a requirement. Which would mean using either option on its own is also fine. Am I reading this right?]
It took us foreeever to get the LATCH system set up in our car and it was my husband who managed to do it. I will be going on a trip with baby (husband will stay home) in which I’ll have friends and family drive me around. I’ll be in at least 3 different cars during this trip. I don’t want to install the latch in every single car if it’s not necessary. If I can get away with using just the seatbelt I’d like to do that.
Will this be safe? Or should I do both?

I wouldn’t check your seat, or even gate check it. It will get banged around, things can spill on it, weather, etc. have someone at your destination buy a cheap seat for you. Spend the 80$ for the Cosco seat from Canadian tire. Then you’re not risking your $ seat getting ruined, and have a seat at your destination for when you go next time! I fly to visit my parents with my baby, and got a seat for their car. It was the easiest way to do it and I don’t regret it one bit.

How old is your LO? Just a thought, maybe you could get a cheaper seat just for travel like the Cosco Scenera Next to make your life a bit easier on the trip? It’s a convertible seat that’s super lightweight and a breeze to install. That way you don’t have to worry about lugging around the base for the Pipa and installing it correctly every time. While the Pipa does allow you to use both to install, all methods of installation (UAS, seatbelt, or both) are equally as safe as they’ve all passed the required safety testing in Canada. I also second the recommendation for the Facebook group, they’re very helpful!!
