Why is Nvidia hiding basic features like fan control and overclocking in 3rd party apps?
They had these features in their own application some years ago called nTune IIRC. No one used it, because the 3rd party application rviatuner was better, so they eventually dropped nTune. Cant blame them. More on reddit.com

This section is adapted from nvfancontrol guide. If you use a desktop manager you may not need this, I run X from console with startx and I need this. NVIDIA wants you to run X11 as root to control the fan speed.

graphics card - Nvidia Desktop GPU: simple fan rpm control for Windows - Super User
This fan speed is capable of easily dropping the temperature under 50 degrees, and it promptly switches off, and some time after, depending on how much I open up the Windows Start menu (or what have you), the temp will eventually creep back to 60, and trigger an audible sound from my computer. I must therefore use a program such as EVGA PrecisionX or something else to override the fan control, leaving it to run it at 400 RPM no matter how cold it gets, or not have it spin up at all until closer to 70 degrees, as we really do need a higher temp threshold for continuous passive operation in my room.

You can adjust the fans of your gpu and also set fan profiles if you like and overclock too. http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm also if your using a laptop it won't adjust the fan just monitor the temps, fan adjustment in msi is for desktop pcs. Bummer, I do have a notebook... I saw there was an option to adjust fan speed in NVIDIA control panel/performance tool bar, but I don't see Performance in my menu.

r/nvidia on Reddit: Why is Nvidia hiding basic features like fan control and overclocking in 3rd party apps?
October 3, 2017 -

This has been really annoying me lately. I need to use a custom fan curve on my GPU because the default one just turns the thing on and off all the time. Which is fine, I don't mind using a custom fan curve. But why do I have to install a (kind of fishy looking, to be completely honest) pretty heavy third party application to do that, and not only that, have to have it running in the background 24/7? It's not even open source either, so I can't even tell what it is doing. And everyone who wants to overclock, undervolt, or do anything like that needs to install and constantly have third party software running in the background. And if you're on Linux? Ah who cares about Linux users.

Why is this functionality not included in the driver control panel, or at the very least in Geforce Experience? AMD have it in their driver panel as far as I am aware (and they have FPS limiting too, which is nice).

Not only that, but Nvidia is not even enabling other developers to write their own tools for this. The publicly available version of the NVAPI (which is what afterburner/precisionx are using to communicate with the driver) is completely laughable, you can retreive a few values but not set anything.

And please don't tell me that it is about security. First of all, the BIOS is enforcing values that won't immediately burn through your GPU anyway. But more importantly, it's not like the NVAPI dll checks for a digital signature or anything. You can just reverse engineer what afterburner/precisionx are doing and call the same functions, and people have already done that. Of course, without proper documentation this is pretty fishy and will essentially prevent any sophisticated open source alternatives. But you know who could not care less about that? Someone trying to fry your GPU.

So, why is Nvidia doing it? Honestly the only reason I can come up with is that EVGA and MSI are paying money to get somewhat exclusive access to the full documentation of the NVAPI. But how much money could that possibly be, and is that really worth a worse customer experience? I'm not going to pretend like I have a choice here, AMD clearly doesn't have anything that will be able to compete with Volta or even a 1080 Ti in the near future, but is that really a reason to treat customers like this? Aren't forced registrations to get access to Geforce experience bad enough already?

r/buildapc on Reddit: How do I control fan curves for an Nvidia GPU?
August 2, 2022 -

I've got an old GTX 1080 which I've had to do a fan replacement on. But now when my PC is idle and every other fan in the computer are off, the fans on the GPU will keep spinning up and down every 2 seconds or so, and these aftermarket fans are very rattly when they spin up and cause a very loud burping sound. I'd rather they were always spinning slow on idle as that would be silent in comparison... How can I control the fans of the GPU?

Try EVGA Precision or MSI Afterburner... both are additional software where custom fan settings can be applied - also give info back on your temperatures (may not need 100%, may find that 60% or 80% is fine) ...

October 10, 2025 - Hello, I would like to report a fan control issue with my NVIDIA RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition when using recent driver versions on both Linux and Windows 10/11. The issue is not related to the operating system but appears to be a driver-level regression, likely affecting fan-control logic or GSP firmware initialization.

The fans you want to control have to be specidied in the fan_controls dictionary. The key of the dict is the fan identifier. The first element of the value is the GPU whose core temperature will be used to adjust the fan speed. Both IDs can be readout using nvidia-settings (both console and the gui) but I plan to provide an easy command-line interface to do this.
