Triexta is pretty on par with nylon but not as expensive. Mohawk Smartstrand is the brand name. We have this stuff and it is very nice. I would generally avoid polyester unless you are thinking short term.

Looking at Dreamweaver twixt or twist something. Nylon was recommended at the local carpet store. But I’m overwhelmed.
—We bought a flipped house about seven years ago. The carpet (in 3 bedrooms) looked cheap and looks worse now. We are retired and home all the time, and the grandkids are in their 20’s. We did have a dear old senior dog (he never lost control in the house) but he liked to roll around on the soft carpet. We now foster senior dogs but they’ve all been very housebroken. So that’s the lifestyle part.—
We just want something that will look ok for 15 yrs, and then it’s all someone else’s project. We don’t take our shoes off. I have mobility trouble so it’s either shoes with braces, or slippers. Husband is a slob. He’s a wonderfully nice slob, but spills are an almost daily occurrence. Red wine included.
I had Berber (called looped now?) in my other house and it was great for a long time. Thanks for reading this far and for any help.

There isn’t really a best of the best for carpet or flooring in general. Everything has a trade off/some stuff is better for some things while others are better for other things. I just want to give you an overlook at the makes of carpet to help you make the right choice for you. I’ll just discuss the lesser known specs and what the common opinions are in the industry about them. Fibers: Polyester - AKA PET, naturally resistant to staining, less expensive fiber, not as durable as the other two main fibers (slicker fiber so twist doesn’t hold as long). Engineered floors (dream weaver/dwelling manufactures) makes a nice selection of polyesters which are all solution dyed, which I’ll go into later Nylon - a very durable fiber, not naturally stain resistant so it isn’t as good for a spill heavy household. Most carpets are chemically treated with some stain resistant coating but still, much easier to stain Nylon. Nylons also tend to be a bit pricier and can be difficult to find these days as many vendors have swapped to focussing on polyesters. (Shaw/Anderson Tuftex make some really nice nylons) Smartstrand - AKA PTT, it’s Mohawk’s most pushed fiber. It’s basically a polyester that’s been treated with some other chemical to add more durability to it. It does usually wear pretty well, but durability is basically between nylon and polyester from what I’ve seen. Also, the smart strand silk is some of the softest carpet I’ve felt. Great option if you want a cut pile /plush carpet that needs to be stain resistant and durable. Wool: I just avoid wool personally, too expensive and not worth it imo Olefin: usually only seen in low grade commercial/Berber style carpets, it can’t hold a twist well and it has a low melting point…I’ve seen friction be enough to melt the fiber and leave a burn/skid mark in the carpet. Just avoid it. Dye types: Batch dye- carpet is made white and then dyed a certain color. Cheaper method for carpets with little manufacturing expectations and lots of color variances. Fading happens more often and can bleach rather easily. (The industry references a radish when explaining this color on the outside, white on the inside). Also you have a high chance of color variation between dye lots. Solution dye- beads are melted down to make the fibers that color throughout. Industry references a carrot here, orange inside and out. Doesn’t fade as easily, nearly eliminates dye lot color variations, hard to bleach. Other things about carpet can be felt and seen like color, density, and twist. Higher twist for cut piles usually means the carpet will be more durable (not Matt down as easily). So I’ll let you choose what you like. For your situation, I do think a Berber/looped, or a cut & loop style carpet at least will be a better fit for you since you like to wear shoes in your home. Maybe consider polyester to help with stain resistance, but trouble with cleaning commercial/Berber style carpets is the fibers can’t really move around that well to get cleaned deeply, so it can be difficult to get discolorations out since you can’t move the fiber around to get access to all the discoloration. Or if you aren’t as worried about staining, a solution dyed nylon looped carpet is always a good durable carpet. Cut and loop carpet are the ones that use both styles of carpet to put some design into the carpet for you. Having some of the carpet looped will still help with increasing durability, and the cut is usually lower pile height so matting down isn’t usually as noticeable if it does happen. I'm considering going with Shaw nylon carpet for my flooring, but I'm concerned a bit - they use continuous dye rather than beck or solution/pre-dye, and I'm not sure how the color will hold up over time.
I want something with a pretty bold and vibrant color, and ideally I'd like that to last a long time.

SHAW CARPETING IS JUNK AND SHAW DOES NOT SUPPORT DEFECTIVE PRODUCTS Be careful when dealing with the Lowes flooring department and in particular, Shaw Carpeting. I contracted for carpeting to be installed in my basement game room, nothing fancy, jus the middle of the line carpet. The installation went smoothly except for a visible seam and some rough edge areas. The installation folks returned and repaired rough edge areas and the attempted to correct the seam (with no success). Shortly after the installation, I noticed ‘sprouts’ of carpeting (loose threads) sticking out. I figured these were simply by products of new carpeting and would subside. Unfortunately, this was not the case and the ‘sprouts’ continued to appear throughout the basement. I contacted the Lowes service center and was redirected to the installation department. They came and inspected the ‘sprout’ situation and told me that they thought the carpet was defective and would report it accordingly. After a few weeks I was told that the carpet manufacture (Shaw Carpet) denied any responsibility and the claim was closed. Meantime my basement carpet was becoming a jungle. I was considering mowing the carpet. I contacted Lowes and explained my dilemma and was told that there was nothing they could do. I got the same response from the out-sourced installation group as well. There was no need calling Shaw Carpet, they didn’t care. I wasn’t sure where to turn to so I filed a complaint with the BBB (Better Business Bureau) and that seemed to get a response from both Lowes and Shaw. This interest was superficial only. They both sent out techs to physically examine the carpet and both technicians told me that, in their opinion, the carpet was defective and should be replaced. They both also claimed that the protruding seam across the middle of the game room was due to both faulty product (carpet) and installation. This whole process went on for close to nine months and required multiple phone calls, emails and meetings at my house. At one point, the folks from Shaw placed blame on my vacuum cleaner and eleven-year-old dog. If that was the case why wasn’t the carpeting throughout the house damaged? Bottom line, Lowes does NOT stand behind the products they sell and Shaw Carpets is just as bad (and probably worse). Ive hire an attorney and plan on filing a formal complaint. It’s not the money anymore…
