Oakland’s sales tax is now 10.25% 😑
Can someone explain why it feels like there's less resources in Oakland than in SF even though our sales tax is one of the highest in the state?
Sales tax?
It’s a great question and sadly one that we can not easily find an answer for. All I was able to dig was measure W, which was an alameda county sales tax hike if 0.5% that adds money to the general fund with the intention of helping with housing.
Every election there are a ton of county and city measures that impact parcel taxes and sales taxes. Because there are so many, it is easy for us to forget what they were for. So, as a result we see a 10.25% sales tax and we don’t know what for.
That is a shame in my opinion. That is government without accountability. I don’t mind paying for services and a strong safety net. But I also don’t like not knowing where my money is going and some transparency would be much appreciated.
