They offered ballistic protection back when most of what was available would fog up, was not comfortable and just cumbersome-- the original eye protection for a lot of people was the giant ass ski dust goggle. Oakleys were a large step up from it and didn't fog up constantly. From there, when you're new, you buy the shit other people have that works.

I was shopping over at OakleySI: the military focused version of Oakley, and I noticed Ballistic Goggles that said that they are APEL (Authorized Protective Eyewear List), but strangely it says they are restricted to DOD customers only.
For actual testing, I’m able to add it to the cart no problem other than clicking “okay” acknowledging that the account is a DOD, despite being Army.
For context: I’m buying my cousin a pair of Ballistic Goggles and M-Frame as a gift to upgrade from his hand-me-down ballistic goggles. I’m using my Brother’s OakleySI account to do the shopping for massive discounts (He is Army vet), and I am wondering if Army qualify as a DOD customer.

As someone who buys a lot of gear for various different outdoor activities I research the products and make a decision on what I want based on my research and own personal preferences. If I asked for Oakley goggles and got Smith goggles instead, regardless of what the people on Reddit said, I would still be less than pleased it was going to require a trip to the store on my part to exchange the Smith goggles for the Oakley's I wanted. Sometimes a gift card is a good way to go so they can get the gear they want.
