2009 Nobel Peace Prize - Wikipedia
2 weeks ago - The Nobel Committee's decision drew mixed reactions from US commentators and editorial writers across the political spectrum, as well as from the rest of the world. Obama accepted the prize in Oslo on December 10, 2009. In a 36-minute speech, he discussed the tensions between war and peace and the idea of a "just war" saying, "perhaps the most profound issue surrounding my receipt of this prize is the fact that I am the commander-in-chief of the military of a nation in the midst of two wars."

October 5, 2018 - To gasps from those assembled, the Nobel committee chairman, Thorbjoern Jagland, said “only rarely has a person such as Obama captured the world’s attention and given his people hope for a better future”. “His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population,” the citation said.

Remarks on Winning the Nobel Peace Prize | The American Presidency Project
I am both surprised and deeply humbled by the decision of the Nobel Committee. Let me be clear: I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations. To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who have been honored by this prize, men and women who've inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace.

May 10, 2013 - KIM LAWTON, correspondent: The Nobel citation praised what it called President Obama’s “extraordinary efforts” to strengthen international cooperation between peoples. It said his vision is founded in hope and the concept that “those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values that are shared by the majority of the world’s populations.” At the White House Friday (October 9), Obama called the award “a call to action.”

r/changemyview on Reddit: At the time it was awarded to him, Barack Obama was wholly undeserving of a Nobel Peace Prize. CMV.
December 8, 2013 -

First of all, I would like to note that the "nominations for the award had been due by 1 February 2009, only 12 days after Obama took office." 1 Twelve days? Seems very early on to make a judgement on whether someone is deserving of the foremost recognition for peace in the world.

On top of this, even when the award was given to Mr. Obama, he was a mere nine months into his presidency. By this time he had hardly accomplished anything of political significance. I am not arguing that he was not attempting to make progress in certain areas, or that the progress he did make was too slow, but I am arguing that 9 months into a presidency is almost universally too short a time to judge whether or not someone is deserving of a Nobel Peace Prize.

Even the Nobel committee's official reason for awarding Obama the prize was flimsy: "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples." [Emphasis mine] Because he is trying to do something, this makes him a good recipient for the prize?

If a NCAA athlete made extraordinary efforts to be a great football player but in reality had accomplished very little, wouldn't it seem a bit ludicrous to award him the Heisman trophy?

I am more or less indifferent to Obama as a president. I do not love him and I do not hate him. I am very open to have my view changed, I just think he was awarded the NPP prematurely/without justification.

Yes, something as prestigious-seeming as the Nobel Peace Prize would seemingly be undeserved by a President who was just elected into office. However, Swedes themselves take a dim view of the Nobel Peace Prize, and once the past winners are taken into account and the context of the prize is shown, Barack Obama is a suitable candidate for the prize. As a tool for political influence, the Peace Prize is wholly deserved. The committee certainly wished to get on America's good side. The prize is often awarded in order to spur future achievement. This is aligned with awarding it early on in Obama's presidency. Yasser Arafat, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Henry Kissinger have all been recipients of the award. Arafat and Kissinger were directly responsible for the continuation of unnecessary wars. At least Obama at that point in his presidency had confined himself to huge domestic policy initiatives at home, and pretty fantastic oratory abroad, intended to foster the healing process necessary for American and World diplomacy. Without America coming to play nice at the table, most countries at the tea party on the world stage get a bit nervous. It's like having an elephant in the room. You'd rather he be sitting down across from you, being a polite elephant, instead of unilaterally smacking everyone with his trunk. Here is a complete list of winners. Would you say Obama ranks in the bottom 10% of them? You decide.

Even the Nobel committee's official reason for awarding Obama the prize was flimsy: "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples." [Emphasis mine] Because he is trying to do something, this makes him a good recipient for the prize? This is the only thing I believe I can effectively comment on. When talking about "peace," particularly "world peace," nobody just accomplishes that task. People accomplish minor tasks in the effort to strengthen international relations. It's not something that one simply makes happen. Almost all Nobel recipients are awarded for their efforts to do something or another. For instance: MLK Jr. was awarded the honor for his efforts to end racial discrimination. Obviously he couldn't simply make racial discrimination vanish, he just paved the way for the future.

Barack Obama 'surprised' and 'humbled' by Nobel peace prize | Barack Obama | The Guardian
July 15, 2017 - We condemn this year's peace prize as unjust," he said. The Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, said he was "not upset" by the award. It remains to be seen whether the prize will indeed strengthen Obama's hand or put him on the back foot in the US where there is acute sensitivity to perceived weakness in international affairs. The citation's assertion that Obama's diplomacy reflects "values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population" riled conservatives who view the US president's role as to stand up to hostile and untrustworthy foreigners.

War and Peace Prizes - Howard Zinn
December 11, 2021 - October 10, 2009. I was dismayed when I heard Barack Obama was given the Nobel peace prize. A shock, really, to think that a president carrying on two wars would be given a peace prize.
