Games never push your GPU to the same degree OCCT would, but you could still encounter instability issues from time to time. Loads are very different between games - while it would run fine in 9/10 games, the tenth game it starts to crash constantly. Answer from Jaba01 on reddit.com

Sufficient stability test settings?
For daily OC stability I use Large AVX2 Extreme, and Small SSE Extreme. I run it for ~8 hours as a final test. If it hasn't thrown errors by then, it's very unlikely to happen after that. More on reddit.com

Whats the most realistic CPU stress test?
First, I think you're mistaking a stress test and a stability test. Occt is more of the latter, trying to detect errors that could be generated by your hardware. For that, there's no avoiding the "putting load on your components" part, that's true. You could avoid it in theory, but error detection would be so long it's basically pointless. You can remove from your mind that a computer that isn't stable under "unrealistic" load is stable under "less" load. If the stability issue is driven by power consumption or heat then yeah, it's true. It's false for everything else, from voltage issue to frequency issues and failing components. Most issues that arises when stability testing would arise under less load, it just would take more time for it to happen. OCCT small is a heavy test that doesn't go past the cpu cache. There's little applications to such programs out there, but it's basically the most effective way of testing your cpu for temperature and such. It's isn't unrealistic, it's designed to be extreme. OCCT large tests your whole cpu/chipset/memory components, and as such, is loading your components less individually. Yet, it is much better to find stability issues than small in practice for general purpose testing. Do not lessen a test to the power it draws or to the temperature the cpu reaches - a stability test will indeed reach higher temps than normal apps, but because a stability test reaches higher temps doesn't mean it is better. A good rule of thumb here is to use occt large with the highest avx instruction set your cpu/os supports. More on reddit.com

Noob question about OCCT v12 "stability" tests
OCCT uses Prime95 as a base for the standard CPU stress test, if you run small data set and AVX2 on a 12/13th gen Intel CPU with unlimited power/current limit and sufficiently strong cooling to not throttle, you'll degrade the chip in a matter of hours More on reddit.com

r/overclocking on Reddit: How reliable is OCCT for a stability test?
February 6, 2025 -

Hello, I have a few questions about OCCT as a stability test. How reliable are these tests? I was testing my GPU overclock using the 3D Adaptive "extreme" test, testing various overclocks. I set +200 on core clock and +1500 on memory clock in MSI Afterburner. Other benchmarks and games were always stable but as soon as I ran the OCCT test it showed me a lot of errors. So I decreased core clock to +150 and left memory clock at +2000 and let it run for another half hour. This time I had no errors. Does this mean that my first overclock despite being stable in games was indeed NOT stable? And does that mean that my second overclock now should be in fact stable as there were no errors?

Hey all.

Stability testing my 13600K OC/undervolt. Primarily use my PC for gaming but also occasionally use Handbrake to re-endcode video.

Would large files, extreme, variable, AVX2 for 24 hours be sufficient to test stability, or should I be running other tests/programs?

Also in case the developer is reading, thanks so much for a great utility.

Honestly for stability i would just do the tests for 3 minutes at a time while you're adjusting the settings and then an hour at the max stable that's not throwing errors in those 3min intervals as a final test . My logic here is that computer power supplies are rated for power per hour so if it's stable for an hour it will stay stable. The theory hasn't failed me yet even if it's wrong lol. U can turn on alerts in hwinfo for whea errors at the very bottom to ensure ur safe too. Just right click total errors, click alert settings, click enable alerting, click if value >=, type in 1 for the value. Then check the play sound box and the display warning window box and you're good. U you can also stack this with the Nvidia control panel feature for Max background application frame rate and put it to 20 so that when you get a hardware info error the pop-up will automatically lower the frame rate of the app in the background which caused the error in the first place. Ive had my comp set up like thay for a few months now using that method and ive mever had a single error aside from when i was configurjng the initial overclocks and if i ever do have one hwinfo will catch it in realtime. Make it start up with windows so the possibibility of forgetting to open it is never there. Thats where the tests on occt draw the error readings from as far as I know. I wouldn't use the occct monitoring mode because it lowers performance in games and makes the OC negligible. I can also walk u thru all the other physical memory load and dimm temps, cpu voltage and temp, core distance to tjmaxx temp, tj max setting, ssd/HDD temps, GPU temp and voltage, and GPU hot spot temp alerts as well if u like to ensure ur completely safe all the time. You'll just transpose the same settings for those from the ones I went over earlier for the whea errors. Just lmk if u need any help. Cheers P.s. if u can't find the GPU core voltage setting, it's cus they have it in the hidden settings for some reason now lol
