Wait, where does Kali come into this? Kali is a distribution for penetration testing. It's a distribution used to test networks for security issues. It's targeted towards attacking other systems, and not defending its user against malicious applications. For instance it runs as root by default for convenience, because many tools it provides need to run as root anyway. So Kali isn't the thing you want for testing random suspicious software on it. See the details from Kali themselves Regardless, VMs do provide a degree of isolation and security, but there have been exploits. And have in mind that if you allow network connections out of the VM, any malicious software in the VM could try to attack your network that way, and it would work exactly like connecting an untrusted laptop right into your network switch. For defending against exploits against the VM itself, Fedora and RedHat provide some mitigation via SELinux.

A VM is not completely secure, but it's a good separation, you really need to look at your threat model and do a risk assessment.

Hi everyone,

I downloaded the Kali Linux VMware 64-bit image from Offensive Security: https://www.offensive-security.com/kali-linux-vm-vmware-virtualbox-image-download/

I was looking at the Kali download docs, which mention checking the validity of any image downloads by using the checksum process: https://www.kali.org/docs/introduction/download-official-kali-linux-images/

However, the docs look as if they all mention having .iso files to do this. It would seem to me that the offensive-security download has no .iso file, as it just has VMware files. So, how can I check the validity of this image?
