All of the sudden, people around the country were aware of “only in Ohio” as a punch line. Of all states to clown on why Ohio? All things considered it is not a bad place and is one of the better parts of the mid west. Growing up in Indiana I thought of Ohio as similar to Indiana but a bit less shity. If it is about being boring Kansas has had that stereotype long before memes existed. If it is about being below average Indiana and Missouri fit the bill way better. Why not Nebraska, Arkansas, Iowa or some other state people outside the US would know little about?

Answer: Might not be as useful but some of the other answers right now are really poor. Mine is based on speculation and answers I've seen before so keep that in mind. The last time this was asked the answer, vaguely, mentioned how Ohio was basically a very average state. It's never mentioned all that often but has a high population, ranking 7th of all states. Compared to other states in the Midwest its comparably very nondescript despite its population. On top of this, apparently people in major cities all know somebody or have family in Ohio. Calling Ohio weird originated somewhere first, probably due to all this or someone's initial view on the state, and then it seemed to snowball into a running joke most likely taken on further by people who have probably never even heard of the state. I'll try to look for the old answer at some point, it was really good at explaining all this. EDIT: I think this is the comment chain I originally read about Ohio . Pasting some key points below. Ohio is pretty unassuming. It’s in “middle America” and considered a flyover state by a lot of coastal American residents. It seems like a disproportionate amount of people are from Ohio relative to its size, even though the state has 3 relatively large cities (Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati). Like you said, everyone knows someone from Ohio, but most don’t really know much about the state itself.

I have seen so many memes of unusual, weird, and scary clips with the caption “only in Ohio”. Is there something special about Ohio, did strange events happen there, or is it just a random city made fun of?

It’s, quite possibly, the most average state in the country. It’s on the border between the midwest and the east coast, so not only is it not too geared towards either region, it also doesn’t really have any sort of “east coast vs west coast” culture. It’s got a pretty average mix of urban, suburban, and rural populations, so it doesn’t stick out for being a big ol’ rural area or particularly metropolitan, but it’s important to note that that mix is maintained by multiple, mid-sized cities, rather than that singular, very notorious city. So, due to the internet’s love of irony, people thought it would be funny to take an extremely milquetoast state and make it the bane of the rest of the world’s existence. Which, let’s face it, is pretty funny.
