Ohio should be slang for "mid" because we are so incredibly average. There are by far worse places but also better ones. We live squarely in the middle of the road. Also, as a German your friend might specifically enjoy Ohio. German is our third most spoken language after English and Spanish. It's still fairly common for schools here to offer German as a foreign language option. Lots of German immigrants to this area around the turn of the last century. Columbus and Cincinnati have a lot of German heritage and cultural influence.

I'm from the smack dab midpoint of gen Z and from Europe (which communicates with American slang far slower). I still remember absurdist Ohio memes from before COVID, and people joked about Ohio in my high school.
It was probably the "funniest" topic related to the overseas that wasn't a massacre.
Did Ohio memes grow far faster here because they're even funnier when you barely know what an Ohio is? Because I'd say Ohio is gen Z slang, maybe late gen Z but still.
