The Model, Type, and Code numbers, stamped directly into the engine, are used to identify our engines. Engines used in lawnmower applications usually have these numbers stamped directly into the blower housing, muffler heat shield, or a few inches above the spark plug.

Also, be aware that the numbers found on the Engine Emissions Label (bottom left) can be confused with the engine Model, Type and Code. The early F Series has the Model & Serial number stamped into the crankcase. The ID tag is the easiest way to identify a vintage Briggs engine. When you encounter an old engine with no ID tag or numbers on the housing, there are other ways to determine what year and model it is.

The model number will be 11 or 12 digits and can be found in one of many locations, including: by the starter, on the cylinder shield, on the metal shield, on the valve cover, above the spark plug, in front of the engine, above the muffler, or on the fuel tank.

December 31, 2011 - Of course there is always the possibility that someone put the decal on as a whim, and it really had nothing to do with Bell. If it really was a Bell item it should have a property number on it somewhere, either as a stencil or a riveted tag, though the property number may have been on the complete assembly, not just on the engine. ... Ricky, it's amazing what shows up on this forum. I have a Briggs that looks identical to yours, except I don't have the speed reducer.

February 26, 2013 - It seems rather too small in diameter to be an oilbath type, but I'm certainly no expert. There are no numbers stamped on top of this one. I have seen it before on others. I read on the A.S.E.C.C. (Antique Small Engine Collectors Club) that they didn't use a code number until 1965. I also read on there that you can figure out how old a engine is with the model and serial number,,on their site.
