does it need a new cartridge ? new ball valve ?

It's single-handle? Probably just needs a new cartridge, yes. Something along the lines of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_ah4CMZgjE But you need to know the exact model.

Help! We have a circa 1997 delta single handle tub faucet that is leaking. Plumber recommended new replacement including punching out the facing wall costing about $600. However, if I can find a replacement, he offered to just replace it in the front. Problem is, I’m not sure what I’m looking for. I found this, but was told it’s just a trim kit. What else should I be looking for? My biggest obstacle to a new replacement is having to diy the wall repair...Amazon replacement

Where and when does it leak? If your trim is the one you found on Amazon, and it is just dripping into the tub, then that's easily repaired. Even with cutting the handle off. Not even an hour's work. A pic of you faucet would help confirm that.

For anyone who stumbles on this post, please let me help save you some time: Delta 1962 shower faucet US Patent # 3056418 Replacement valve parts that you’ll need are RP4993 and RP212 They’re sold separately, but I found them as a single kit at Home Depot. It was hanging nearby these individual parts.
