Love that decade for the music and the movies! In Alphabetical Order, with links to trailers and reasons:- Aliens (1986) - First ever group date, the guys probably chose this expecting the girls would cling to them, and it worked. Great action flick by James Cameron, with Ripley becoming full fledged bad ass heroine especially when she warns "Get away from her, you B... " Amadeus (1984) - This masterpiece about Mozart's life won Best Picture and deservedly so. That one scene with the nagging mother in law seguing to the Queen of the Night aria was just jaw dropping Wow. Back To The Future (1985) - Groundbreaking, fun, comedy, action, angst, all of it, with a great sound track showing us why this movie endured the test of time, that's The Power Of Love. E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (1982) - The story, the score, this is one of the all time greats. Yes, everyone was super into BMX bikes after that movie, including me. Stand By Me (1986) (Netflix) - Based on Stephen King's The Body, Rob Reiner directed one of the best coming of age movies, that still holds up today. That Lard Ass Story! OMG! Timeless. The final 2 lines are always mentioned when asked about the best ending lines of any movie, of all time. Streets of Fire (1984) (Netflix) - A Rock n Roll Fable where the beautiful, the brutal and the brave all meet. Everyone is going nowhere fast, but the Jim Steinman music is rocking, the vibe is proto cyber-punk and we have villain Daniel Dafoe in an early role acting his ass off, dude managed to look menacing dressed in leather overalls with a strange hairstyle. Plus that ending elevated a good movie into greatness. The Breakfast Club (1985) - John Hughes teen drama with all the stereotypes, yet it has heart and managed to connect with nearly everyone at some level, ending with a song and gesture we later see in Pitch Perfect. The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of The Jedi (1983) - List wouldn't be complete without Star Wars. Empire had a shocker reveal, but strangely nobody actually "spoilered" it for others so we were all shocked when it happened. Good times. Jedi gave us the iconic metal bikini and finished what was at the time, widely considered one of the best trilogies ever made. The Outsiders (1983) - Based on a book written by a 17 year old author, this movie stars just about every single teen heartthrob actor of that generation (Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, C Thomas Howell, Tom Cruise etc.), all in 1 movie, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Oh yes, the story and writing are good too. The Princess Bride (1987) - It would be inconceivable if this wasn't on the list. Hilarious, fun and still one of the most quoted movies of all time. The Terminator (1984) - James Cameron movie that started a franchise, and had one of the best action sequels in Terminator 2. "I'll be Back." After this movie I had the biggest crush on Michael Biehn. Top Gun (1986) - Tom Cruise. Planes. Fantastic OST. When we walked out of the theater we felt the need, the need for speed! Top Secret (1984) - Val Kilmer is in this fantastic parody, with that unparalleled underwater bar fight scene ! When Harry Met Sally (1989) - This Rob Reiner film is always regularly mentioned as one of the best rom coms of all time, plus it introduced me to the music of Harry Connick Jr., who I am still a fan of. r/movies on Reddit: What films from the 1980s everyone should see
November 27, 2023 -
Alright friends. What movies would you recommend everyone see that were released in the 1980s? I see lots of different films recommend here but I’ve also read that many people view the 1980s as a sort of turning point for cinema that heavily influenced the films that would come in the 1990s and beyond (whether or not that’s true does seem to be up for debate but let’s go with it for now). Bonus points if you’re able to provide a reason or two as to why they should.
