My workplace uses a lot of prepaid debit/gift cards, particularly American Express, Visa, and MasterCard, and often the purchases use almost all of what's on the card, leaving a not-insignificant buildup of cards with leftovers of ~$0.25.
Is there anything we can actually do with those last few cents? There doesn't seem to be any way to just transfer it off the card, since transaction fees are usually greater than the actual value of what's left.
There have been some questions about this in the past, but by and large the answers to them no longer work in 2024 or are aimed at cards with a few dollars left.
Couldn’t find a better sub for this so please pardon me and/or advise if I should post elsewhere
How can I successfully use a prepaid card that was issued to me for a purchase when the prepaid card’s value is less than the full purchase price? I.e., I will need to use multiple payment methods to complete a purchase because my prepaid card only has a small amount on it left but I don’t want that money to go to waste.
Every time I try to do this online or even over the phone with a customer service representative, they can’t make it happen which I find ridiculous.
If I know the remaining amount/balance available for me to spend on the prepaid card, why can’t they just run the card for that amount, and then allow me to pay the remaining purchase price using whatever additional payment method I provide?
I feel like I’m wasting money (which I would be) if I can’t use what is left available on this prepaid card.
Edit: I do not have a physical copy of this card but I have experienced the same issue in the past with physical prepaid cards as well. I do not want to request a physical card for this prepaid card because a fee would be incurred, thus lowering the amount available to me. This was issued to me as part of a settlement deal for some class action lawsuit.
