I have experience with many of those companies over the last 30 years and still have furniture from some in my house, where we have lived almost 5 years. Before this house we lived in a condo for 10 years. Here are my thoughts: IKEA has different price points and that makes a difference in terms of the longevity / quality of what you get. If you are buying something that needs to be put together, like a dresser, be sure to do it carefully and properly and to tighten the anchors every now and then forever. We have a Pax wardrobe that was great in the condo, took it apart and rebuilt it differently for the house and still get compliments on it. Flatpacked is more fragile for moving, but it’s possible. I just bought a bed frame and mattresses from them for our guest room. We have a Structube couch and after almost 5 years, I’d say the cushion in the seat is still in great shape. The back cushions are a little annoying, slumped and creased, but they have basically held up. We have an EQ3 bed frame with integrated drawers and it is great. No complaints. We paid to have them put it together on site, and my recollection is that it went fast & smooth. We have EQ3 upholstered counter stools which continue to be sturdy and attractive after 5 years of daily use. Cushioning is a little wearing down, but I think they are still comfortable. The build quality is such that I will likely reupholster them to add more cushioning before the end of their lives. We have Structube leatherette dining chairs with metal legs that are probably 14 years old. They are still sturdy but the “leather” is visibly cracking and they aren’t as comfortable as they used to be. I think we got good value for what we paid. We have ordered replacement dining chairs from CasaLife. This seems like a good furniture store - our chairs will be Canadian made, metal frames. While I am often tempted by the shiny ads for West Elm, Pottery Barn, when I am actually shopping, I think their furniture is super over priced for our market. The Chesterfield Shop has always been an option worth checking out. They have multiple locations. Shelter furniture on Caledonia keeps threatening to go out of business, but I have been tempted by furniture there. We bought the recliner chair I am sitting in from The Bay, Queen Street. Palliser furniture, made in Montreal, really solid. Good after sale service. You say you don’t want secondhand, but have you visited the good consignment shops? Of Things Past, The Apartment Life. I have never seen anything at Leon’s or the Brick that appealed to me style-wise. More on reddit.com
