so, pokken’s solution to group lobbies and spectating is probably one of its most detrimental missing features apart from the netcode itself. as you might have already seen, when it’s just you against one other friend, you can use the friendly matchmaking queue and share a search password with your opponent in order to guarantee that you pair up together. however, in scenarios where you want more than one player in the lobby, the best thing you can do is host a “Group” which can have up to 100 players in it. Groups are weird because they remain active until the specified end date, have an obtusely long search ID, and are usually private on top of that. in Groups, everyone plays at once and people who are waiting for a match play a CPU. you can’t manually pair people off- you just match with whoever happens to be in the Group, and you can’t always see this or tell who you’re getting paired with. you also cannot spectate or facilitate true winners stays/king of the hill-style rotations in these, making them less than ideal for, say, tournaments or large groups of friends who want to play all at once. Groups mainly serve as private matchmaking queues more than real lobbies. official online tournaments tend to work around this by either relying on the capture/stream software of one of the players involved, or by having the players submit the replay to the stream casters after the match is over. r/PokkenGame on Reddit: How does private room work? (Online multiplayer with selected friends)
March 3, 2021 -

Hello people, I am very new to the game and just played the demo (Switch). I have a question concerning the online multiplayer, a feature not available in the Demo.

How precisely does it work, when I create a private room with specific friends (say, 6, in average)? And what is the max number of participants?

For instance: in Smash Bros (max 8 people), 4 players fight simultaneously, while the remaining see the match as spectators. We, players, decide how to organize the "tournament", and anyway overall points are tracked by the game. Or, in Mario Kart, we can just play all together at the same time; same with Splatoon 2. How does it work with Pokken DX? I imagine that only 2 players can play simultaneously; will the other watch the match? Does the game provide a "tournament tree" structure, or do we have to do it by our own? Not a problem at all: I ask for the sake of having an appropriate expectation.

Thank you in advance!

PS: I know Pokken is mainly a 1v1 game; but a good support for extensive multiplayer would be a plus.

Unfortunately the game doesn't have anything for spectating. If you are all in a group, the game will match you up randomly, so it takes coordination from the parties involved to organize who matches with who.
