I’m devastated right now. At this very moment, I just got kicked out of my job without any explanation. I’m 100% sure I did my work properly, but HR replaced me with someone they are very close to, probably a friend.

I have a wife, a baby, and a mother with a disability who depend on me. I don’t have any savings because we’ve been dealing with illness these past few months. I have no idea how I’ll cover our upcoming bills or even put food on the table for my family.

If you know of any side hustles, even repetitive work, I’m willing to take it.

Basically what the title says, I'm looking for an online typing job, more specifically like a data entry job such as typing texts from images, etc. I have tried transcription before but I am having trouble with most of the audio since English is not my first language. I can do 130 WPM of typing speed and I believe that it is somehow above average.

I get 120+ wpm on 10fastfingers and usually 100-110 for full paragraphs. I have a good handle on English grammar and spelling, and a decent grasp on Korean, but aside from that not much else. I've applied to CopyTalk which is a local FL transcription service but they pay min wage I believe, and I'd have to work at an office. Is there a better alternative? I'd really like something that compensates based on amount of work done, and isn't long-term/full time - just need a summer job. If someone can tell me where I can transcribe porn for deaf people or translate hentai/manga I'd be so, so down.

I'm just going to warn you: while fast typing helps, transcription is a lot more than just typing. It's deciphering what multiple voices are saying, proper punctuation, distinguishing voices, researching terminology. Typing is the easy part. It's figuring out what to type that's difficult. What to watch out for in terms of pay: you can expect to spend at least 4 hours transcribing an hour of audio. That is the industry standard for professional transcriptionists. It is also for clearly dictated audio. That is the issue since much of what transcription companies get in terms of audio is not clear and is not dictated. The audio quality is poor--voices are muffled, distorted, garbled. There is hissing, static, echoes, background noise or foreground noise like rustling against the mike. Speakers are nowhere near the mike, or have heavy accents. That means in reality that 4:1 turns into 6:1 or longer. Plus add another hour to proofread the final product and you're looking at at least 7 hours to do an hour of audio in many cases. Just use that as a guide when deciding who to work for. If you're looking to make at least minimum wage, expect no less than 85 cents per audio minute. Many companies like Rev.com, TranscribeMe and Scribie pay about half that. Those companies should be avoided by anyone who values their time at all.

Well, if you're looking to make big bucks, I can't help you, because I'm looking for something above min wage myself. But if you want to make a few bucks in your free time, there are a few transcription sites that don't require experience and let you work whenever, wherever. All you need to do to get started is pass a test, and if your English is good and you can type fast, it can be worth your while. I can recommend GoTranscript | NonRef but if you search around this sub you can find more of them. I believe they also offer translation services, but I didn't look for ways to apply for that yet.

Hello. I would like to know if there's any typing/data entry website/company you know of which is legit. I've been trying to look for such jobs for a while and all I found were scams.

I'm a fast typist(160wpm) so I'm really intrigued by finding such job that would suit me. Besides transcription sites, do you know any legit online / data entry jobs?

My husband and I have very recently found ourselves in a financial predicament. I would prefer not to go into details, but we are now in a position where we need to come up with an additional $900 a month for about a year and a half. We both work Full-Time, and looking at our budget, this is something that is more than feasible, but - like many Americans, we are living paycheck to paycheck, even though we both make decent money. We have reviewed our budget and have come up with a plan, and like I said, this extra money each month is something that is [easily] built into our budget, but I am wondering if anyone knows of any Freelance/Per Diem jobs that are available that I can do data entry, typing, drafting, etc. from home, and just a couple of hours a day, that could give us a little extra cash each week? I looked at Upwork, filled out the profile, only to find out that I need to pay a monthly premium to use the service, with no guarantee of finding something. (I also looked at reviews and on the subreddit, and it seems like it is more of a hassle than it's worth). Does something like this exist? My husband talked about maybe finding a PT job for the weekends, but honestly, I am not okay with that. We have an 8 year old, school just started, and we have very limited family time together as it is. Like I said, we can make this work and it's within our budget, but I'm just thinking if there is something I can do at home for maybe an hour or two an evening, a few days a week, that is something that could help us out.

Any and all advice is appreciated. Thanks, ladies. :)

EDIT: Good Point! I probably should have put my skills! Sorry ladies.

I am a current office manager for a Millwork company. I have experience with invoicing, purchase orders, scheduling, payroll reconciliation, account tasks, calendar management, inventory tracking, etc. I have previous experience in the clerical/office admin assistance for retail health. Most of my experience is mostly administrative and office type stuff.

I have a Bachelors in Political Science.

I am NOT interested in doing any type of delivery service, pet sitting or baby-sitting. I am looking for something that can be done at home in the evenings, possibly early mornings, and even early mornings and evenings on the weekend. I have done Instacart in the past - it costs more than you make and is hardly worth the time, expense or stress.

Thanks!

Hey everyone!

I'm a college student with a lot of free time on their hands and I was wondering if anyone knew of freelance jobs for people that can type fast (my WPM is 160-170), like audio transcriptions or captioning. Thanks!

Top answer

You can probably find transcription work for prerecorded video, but even at 160-170 I'd think live captioning would be hard without stenotype speeds.

I'm not sure how I'd advertise that or what I'd charge, though. You could maybe see if there are youtubers who need their videos captioned, since it's important for HoH accessibility.

I was once paid to typeset some damaged books and papers into PDFs, aided greatly by 140wpm, but it was a one-off thing. I also underpriced myself badly in retrospect.

Aternatively data entry or secretarial work are the typical domains for speedtyping.

I would agree that even the fastest typist in the world is going to struggle to keep up with the pace of people talking, even if they're not particularly fast.

That's why they have stenographers in law courts and not just some guy on a keyboard.

The best way you can practice this is to watch a YouTube video of something like a news bulletin, weather forecast, financial report, where the people on the screen talk almost continuously.

You can then verify the accuracy and completeness of what you've done afterwards by watching the video again with the subtitles on. I type at just under half your speed on a good day. I have tried this and it was way too much for me. But that's not saying anything.

Having to type at this speed when listening to people talk is very different from having to read words passively on the screen. It takes a lot longer for your brain to hear the spoken words and translate them into finger movements.

The main problem is that you can read ahead when typing text from a screen. Even just a slight bit of reading ahead is massively valuable to speed because it all but eliminates the tiny pauses that people take between words.

With audio typing though, you can't listen ahead. You have no idea (more or less) what the next word out of someone's mouth is going to be and whether or not they will speed up their rate of speech, or if the video will cut back to someone else who speaks very quickly or with an accent that you can't quite understand.

From experience I can say that typing does help you in your job in the internet age, but it doesn't help you as much as you would like to think and at your current speed you have shot well passed the point of diminishing returns i.e. you could get another 30 wpm faster and it wouldn't help you any more.

We've also passed the era where typing is the sole focus or main focus of someone's job. If you have another skill to pair it with, like being a teacher, author, linguist, project manager, computer programmer, website developer, salesperson etc then it's a wonderful additional skill to support whatever else you're doing, but on it's own, you will find very little demand for just typing stuff.
