The rub here is bandwidth. Many folks in this sub are needing to convert: compressed codecs to editable high res codecs (e.g. mobile devices to things like ProRes, DNxHR, Cineform, or for Avid, and thus .mxf OPAtom files) High Res files (ProRes, DNxHR, Cineform) to web-friendly (YouTube, Vimeo, etc) formats. Both of these require either a fast upload or fast download connection. AND...will this upload and/or download time be worth the time saved by NOT having your editing machine do it? More often than not home connections aren't very good for this. Business (offices) connections are better suited for this, but often they'll have a spare machine to do these types of big conversions or have a dedicated in house transcoder. Companies like Telestream are doing this for our area of the industry (Vantage Cloud), but offer up things liek QC, analytics, etc...much more than simple file flips. You could look to add things like: Parsing the closed captioning (if any) and convert to various formats (VTT, SRT, SCC, etc) Adding a watermark (user uploads a graphic file) Presets for YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo. (this would be for novices, who would upload a h.264 because they didn't know how to configure their transcoder for these VOD outlets) presets to convert MKVs to mobile devices (tablets, phones, etc.). It really boils down to whether you're doing commonplace transcoding or you have something highly specialized, like tricky frame rate conversions with motion estimation or upscaling.
