Open Box Excellent does not mean all items are included. Their incompetent staff does not check to make sure all items are included.

r/Bestbuy on Reddit: My honest opinion on Open Box
June 21, 2025 -

Context I have always heard of Open Box is a great especially if it’s grated as Excellent so I went to Best Buy to get a OLED monitor Open Box and then when I got home hooked it up I saw the most discoloration and burn mark on screen. So I return it for exchange had to go to a different Best Buy Location for the exchange. When I was able to I asked the employee to check for me so it doesn’t happen again since this location was a farther location. He just turned it on and said it was good, I told him can he plug in a HDMI or something to double check but he refused. So had to drive back home to install it again just to have it the same issue but not as serve as the last one but this frustrated me more cause I feel like Best Buy doesn’t check the product. And all they can do is just offer you a return and suggest to buy a brand new one at this point which was $700 more. That whole experience felt scummy likely the pushed me to get the expensive item and only offered me $100 off my inconvenience. Just want to vent that out of my experience and see if anyone has something similar

Best Buy - "Open Box"? - Bogleheads.org
Open Box Excellent items, are generally only discounted 10% from the price for the item brand new and sealed. Just not worth that small discount in my opinion. You may have better luck getting a larger discount and a better condition item purchasing refurbished direct from the manufacturer ...

What Is 'Open-Box' and Should You Buy It?
May 31, 2023 - Open-box products have a similarly bad reputation because the term suggests they're used. However, they may actually be brand-new items — just with a nice discount because the box happens to be open.

March 10, 2025 -

Basically I came across this device on bestbuy's website and the deal looks too good to be true. So, i have 2 questions to ask

  1. Is this a great deal?

  2. Is it safe to buy open box from bestbuy? Can anyone share their experience if they have purchased an open box from bestbuy before? Are they reliable?

This would be Bestbuy Canada since im from Canada Link to the product -

As someone who has brought multiple "open box" items from Bestbuy i can say yes you can trust them. The battery maybe toast but it should be good.

Use to work at Best Buy. Open Box is items that are returns and are allowed to be resold (some items can’t like earbuds, etc). Returns are Best Buy are 14-days and use to 45-day for Best Buy members who spent over $3,000 a year. Now returns have changed to be a little longer than 45-day but you pay for their Total Tech Membership. I no longer work there so I don’t know the specifics. So, returns are items that are normally lightly touched. I have bought MacBook Open-box, in 2018, and it is still great. I have bought Apple products, phone (1 time), TV, and accessories like cables all as open-box. If you see a non-Apple Open box item on a deep discount there could be three reasons (that come to mind). It is on sale already, so the open-box is discounted as well. There are cosmetic issues with the product. Dents and scratches. This specific item has been returned before, purchased as Open-box, and returned again. Therefore, it goes on open-box again. Don’t get scared by #3, you wouldn’t know anyway. People return shit literally same day or next day all the time. It is more common than you may think. You can return open-box items, so you can test it out and verify if it meets your expectations. Edit: if warranties are available on that specific item, an open-box item will also be able to get that warranty

Though it was worth a shot to save $115 on an X with an open box. Like often recommended I opened at the store to make sure it looked good and it did. However I made the mistake of not turning it on. I got home then turned it on and let it update. I left the room briefly only to hear the sound of a dying cow groaning behind me. Once I set it up even in idle "Silent" mode it was very audible. I don't know if this horrible coin whine or bad bearings or what.

I returned it and just bought a brand new one which is far quieter and no groan. Best Buy didn't give me a hard time but the employee didn't appear to take note of why I returned it. Hopefully they don't try to sell it again.

My local Best Buy has a pretty sweet deal on an open-box 75” Sony X95K (46% off MSRP), and they rate it as “excellent” condition, but not certified. I’m assuming it was a display model. Anyways, should I take the risk, what could go wrong? Returns are accepted so if it has a dead pixel or whatever I can bring it back. Would appreciate any input!

Is it safe to buy Best Buy "Fair" condition open box Bravia 7? | AVS Forum
No, I wouldn't buy an open box fair item. Don't want to blindly buy? No, again. ... I would be wary of "fair" and go after "like new" but like people said, it's a crapshoot. That said, if it's not a hassle to return, I say go for it. I've gotten plenty of hardware (not in the AV world) in "fair" condition and was pleasantly surprised.

r/ROGAlly on Reddit: For Those Considering Best Buy "Fair Condition"
August 19, 2023 -

I was able to pick up a "Fair Condition" Ally for $460 at my local Best Buy. I know people here are stressing picking up an Excellent, but wanted to offer up an experience from someone who often buys used Fair during sales to maximize value.

  • You can return anything bought at Best Buy during holidays up until Mid January. This includes open box stock.

  • Most "Fair" stock means no original box and/or missing part. It does not mean it is broken in anyway.

  • My item was PRISTINE. Basically brand new but came with no box, no power supply. I bought an Anker 100W for $24 which IMO is better than the included and I'm going to use a dock for TV anyway.

  • YMMV, but I've bought a ton of items marked Fair from Best Buy and it has never been an issue. They are NOT final sale, so worst case scenario you can return if not up to snuff.

r/ultrawidemasterrace on Reddit: Best Buy "Open Box" excellent condition rant
April 22, 2025 -

Just wanted to vent a little.

Went to bestbuy online and saw a great deal on the new LG 5k2k monitor, open box, inspected by Geek squad to be excellent condition. I purchased it online and drove about 30 miles to pick it up

Once I get there to pick it up, I asked them to open the box so we can inspect it to verify its all good. Box gets opened, looks a bit dirty and box shredded. I immediately notice the stand is the wrong one, and they tried to reassure me it was the correct stand (It was last years model) --- then I verified the model number, and it was infact last years OLED model, that had lower resolution. After all that, I got a return, and got a "we're sorry", and thats it. Wasted time, gas, patience.

"Geek squad verified" -- what a joke. How can they say they verified it, when it was literally the wrong monitor in the box? Clearly the person who returned it, kept the newer model and returned his old one.

February 19, 2024 - I’ve bought two laptops from them and they were in excellent condition. Other than missing plastic they were new. My current 15 in MB air is a Best Buy open box item. 256gb with 512 gb ram for $1170ish was a steal. You can always return them if it didn’t meet your expectations.
