As someone who has brought multiple "open box" items from Bestbuy i can say yes you can trust them. The battery maybe toast but it should be good.

Use to work at Best Buy. Open Box is items that are returns and are allowed to be resold (some items can’t like earbuds, etc). Returns are Best Buy are 14-days and use to 45-day for Best Buy members who spent over $3,000 a year. Now returns have changed to be a little longer than 45-day but you pay for their Total Tech Membership. I no longer work there so I don’t know the specifics. So, returns are items that are normally lightly touched. I have bought MacBook Open-box, in 2018, and it is still great. I have bought Apple products, phone (1 time), TV, and accessories like cables all as open-box. If you see a non-Apple Open box item on a deep discount there could be three reasons (that come to mind). It is on sale already, so the open-box is discounted as well. There are cosmetic issues with the product. Dents and scratches. This specific item has been returned before, purchased as Open-box, and returned again. Therefore, it goes on open-box again. Don’t get scared by #3, you wouldn’t know anyway. People return shit literally same day or next day all the time. It is more common than you may think. You can return open-box items, so you can test it out and verify if it meets your expectations. Edit: if warranties are available on that specific item, an open-box item will also be able to get that warranty

Context I have always heard of Open Box is a great especially if it’s grated as Excellent so I went to Best Buy to get a OLED monitor Open Box and then when I got home hooked it up I saw the most discoloration and burn mark on screen. So I return it for exchange had to go to a different Best Buy Location for the exchange. When I was able to I asked the employee to check for me so it doesn’t happen again since this location was a farther location. He just turned it on and said it was good, I told him can he plug in a HDMI or something to double check but he refused. So had to drive back home to install it again just to have it the same issue but not as serve as the last one but this frustrated me more cause I feel like Best Buy doesn’t check the product. And all they can do is just offer you a return and suggest to buy a brand new one at this point which was $700 more. That whole experience felt scummy likely the pushed me to get the expensive item and only offered me $100 off my inconvenience. Just want to vent that out of my experience and see if anyone has something similar

I wouldn’t buy a monitor if it’s been grated.

my opinion as a sales advisor at a BB is that open-box is only worth it for certain items, and not delicate items. for laptops, honestly hit or miss and I always recommend ordering for store pickup or purchasing in-store so that you can open it in front of us. for monitors, I never recommend it. the panels are too delicate to be taking chances imo, and i have often had returns for open box monitors. this might be specific to my store though so my experience is anecdotal, not factual, although it seems that you have had two bad experiences in a row. for small electronics like cables, speakers, gadgets, usually a pretty good deal as most of the time they were returned after minimal-to-no usage. sorry this happened to you OP!

Anyone have good or bad experiences with buying Open Box deals from Best Buy? I would only go with "excellent" condition - so likely new but either a display laptop or returned, but obviously some risk involved.

I bought my Flow X13 as an open buy excellent. Been working great for the past year. They offer to let you check it out in store before purchasing.

The open box usually just nets you a slight discount on the item. Most of the time it's 100% fine and was returned for personal preference reasons. Whenever I buy a big ticket item if I don't 100% love it, I return it and most of the time they are fine but didn't meet my particular high standards or preferences. Also, you can still return this item if you don't like it. Check to make sure it comes with normal return and warranty policies (usually do).

Used to work at BB DEFINITELY encourage people to get open boxes. They're great with returns in the off chance it actually has issues and you can (and should) negotiate price. Keep in mind they want open boxes off the floor ASAP so they'll typically drop price to or close to cost, just to get rid of it.

Just do it. Go check it out in person before you buy it obviously. I just got an unbelievable deal on 65" a80l.

Was listed on site as good quality at 1300 so I decided to check it out. I get there and apparently it was ready for an order for pick up but the person never came to pick it up.

They somehow lost the original box (which was kind of odd) but I was chopping it up with the dude and he offered to get me a better price. Called his manager over, did his thing, came back and said he could give it to me for $1000.

Tried not to get too excited but I nearly ejaculated at the thought. They brought it over and looked it over. No scratches, no scuffs, everything is in the box. They told me I have 2 weeks for return so I got nothing to lose, pulled the trigger and wrang it up. Just couldn't boot it up in store, so when I got home checked the screen hours and it only had 15 mins.

It's been 2 weeks, just managed to dial in my settings and I could not be happier.

100% agree with this - and with the savings, you can also add Geek Squad for upwards of 5 years to cover any burn-in. With the unknowns of how long a TV will last, buying BestBuy Open Box + Warranty is actually a better deal than buying BestBuy New with no Warranty. Just always do as many inspections as possible both before and after purchasing (there are so many tests available) and check the total on-hours if it's available (I know it is with Sony. Not sure about other brands.) Always jealous of these posts, the deals for Open Box in US are insane. In Canada, there is no tiering for product quality (there's no Good, Great, Excellent, etc. - they'd all cost the same amount) - and they rarely have Open Box units in-store for pickup (especially in smaller cities.) Enjoy the TV!

Best Buy open-box and buying a 5-year warranty is the best bet for TV's imo, especially OLED's.

What I recommend whenever is something open box is to go to the store and see the laptop in person to make sure that it has everything that it says that it has. While is true that us Geek Squad makes sure that the open box computers are working and clean from any client data, sometimes we forget to put the charger back in the box or something small like that since we also working with clients at the same time and it slips away so that’s what I’ll recommend

Open-box are items returned by a customer that have been opened. There's other types of open-boxed items like service returns that get put out but vast majority are the former and not a repaired item. So yes you can trust them, most products returned are only days old and tested by Geek Squad. It's their job to make sure they're working and free of client data.

I noticed very poor inconsistency with Best Buy’s grading. I had done the same as you, driving about 30 miles to find speakers that were in very rough shape and were higher priced than what was on the website. I decided to pass. Found the same speakers a week later, in perfect condition (also marked “fair”) for cheaper than the other pair. They’ve been exceptional. A little patience with Best Buy and you can walk away with a great deal.

Has anyone purchased an open box MacBook Pro from best buy in order to save some money. What was your experience.

I used to work there. People usually return items in mint/great condition because of all types of reasons. Couldnt afford it, impulse purchase, wife didnt approve purchase, you name it. It still comes with the same exact warranty and return policy as new items, if it saves you money go for it.

Buy it, test it and if anything’s wrong, return it! “Excellent” is usually brand new-ish!

FYI I’ve gotten really great deals from Best Buy open box..

Most recently I purchased an open box excellent 49” Samsung Odyssey OLED G9. It still had all the peels on it. The cables (DP and HDMI) were still tightly wrapped with the brown paper SAMSUNG cable ties, which have to be torn for the cables to be used, so they were clearly never used. per smart things all, the monitor had 9 hours of panel time, so practically brand new.

There was a note in the box from the return saying “monitor shuts off”. Now, I’m no expert- but I know enough to know that if you don’t use a high bandwidth cable with these monitors they will, indeed blank out and the monitor would appear to “turn off”.

TLDR: I saved $220 off the current sale price because some moron didn’t use the cables that came with the monitor. It’s on sale for $1079, I took a chance and got it basically brand new for $858. Now that I know I’m keeping it, I will be going back to add the 4 year geek squad warranty.

Just my experience I thought I would share.

Geek squad Best buy employee for 5 years here. Not sure what's so scary about open box anything. 99% of returns are just normal innocent people having buyers remorse, or like in your case, don't know how to use the product and barely touched it. Edit: to be completely clear - I'd still only advise open box in the situation that you know EXACTLY what you are buying, done your research/ owned something similar, and know what common issues to look for. You should essentially know as much, if not more, about the product than the sales person at the store.

What is the consensus on purchasing open box, specifically from Best Buy? I know they grade their open box with top being excellent then good and so on. Hey! Theres a aw3225qf for $700 Open-Box - Excellent at a Best Buy near me. I know I can always return it before 15 days, but wondering if you guys have any opinions on open box, especially with it being OLED.

Edit: ended up getting it, after two days, it’s been absolutely flawless. Extremely happy with my purchase. I looked pretty close with a flashlight and didn’t see any scratches

It’s a gamble. It can be brand new or a display model with 8k hours on it (don’t ask how I know). Just get it, check the hours and condition.

Question for current and former employees. So I’m about to buy an open box item in the next few days and wondering if I’m able to inspect it before I purchase it. It says minor scratches and or stains and it says geek squad refurbished. Am I allowed to look at it and test it before buying? And is there any other tips to know when buying an open box item? The item is rather expensive so being able to inspect it before hand would be nice.

You can inspect it, though depending on what it is and how in-depth might cause an issue, but Open Boxes are one of the least understood items we sell. For whatever reason customers seem to think a return means the product shoots sparks, had someone take a knife to it and go out of their way to destroy it because there is no reason someone would return a $200 laptop. The reality is that these are boring items with boring stories attached. Usually high end stuff gets returned because people need the money, were renting (some people will buy a laptop for a trip and then return it after because they forgot it or it stopped working), needed it for an event (Super Bowl) or simply another family member said no. Low end stuff gets returned because after the associate swore up and down a $170 Chromebook will not help your 18-year-old son do autoCAD or you simply can't replace a plasma television with a TCL 4 series or really bland reasons like it wasn't big enough, they didn't measure the legs, laptop is too big, etc. There is no policy against accepting a defective product for a return and it is tested and shouldn't happen (not that it doesn't, both with Open Box or new). Finally, a lot of the tags mean nothing. Minor scratches appears on most because the amount off for a perfect condition product will just force the store to discount it. Like, a perfect condition Samsung 7 series in 65" is $600. In perfect condition opened, it's $582, whereas the step down is $564. It's easier to just say it has scratches and drop it $36 than try to fight someone over taking it for just $18 off.

I bought “fair” back in November. I went into the store and the BB employee opened it up so I could check it out before I bought it. It was essentially like-new, came with box charger cardboard stand and everything. There was like one finger smudge on the screen I wiped off. I’ve been using it almost every day since and have had zero issues. I’m really enjoying this thing and am constantly impressed by it.

I bought an excellent condition open box during the sale for 503. No issues at all looked brand new with all the accessories in it. Best buy has a great return policy so if you're not happy with what you get you can just return it and get another one. Also, mine still came unregistered and with the free PC gamepass. Happy hunting.

All this tell me is they are taking trade-ins and selling them as "open box", which they aren't. They can be sold as "used" or as preowned, though I am more pissed off at Best Buy for being disingenuous. IT looks like it works and was wiped, though the battery is low and I am using my phone's power share as they left out the charger. Not mention the person who rated this watch as excellent condition has to be legally blind.

Trade ins cannot be sold as open box they return to the manufacturer. Most Open Box required a func check but depending on your precinct it's pretty easy to pencil whip a func check and end up with something on the shelf that should either the marked lower quality or not on the shelf at all. All that aside there's no like. Legal terms surround open box stuff. Open Box means whatever the fuck best buy decides it means. It can absolutely mean no box.

I have had good luck with open box items so far. ASUS G14 with 4060 open box excellent. Came in as described in like-new condition. I would feel fine going for it. If anything looks wrong I would be quick to return it though.

My local Best Buy has a pretty sweet deal on an open-box 75” Sony X95K (46% off MSRP), and they rate it as “excellent” condition, but not certified. I’m assuming it was a display model. Anyways, should I take the risk, what could go wrong? Returns are accepted so if it has a dead pixel or whatever I can bring it back. Would appreciate any input!

I love buying open box from Best Buy. I just add geek squad protection for 2 or 5 years, b/c often there's no warranty when open box. If that's correct, buy the protection and you're good to go.

Yes, I've purchased a few the old LG I still use today was an open box from like 2019 and still works fine. I'd only be careful with open box OLEDs because a lot of open boxes are tvs that came of off display so OLEDs may have burnout

Has anyone had a good experience with Best Buy open box?

I'm hesitant to buy anything "open box" but my local best buy has an excellent condition Bravia 9 75" for $2400. If I add 5 years protection it would be $3100.

Was torn between this and an LG G5/C5.

UPDATE:

I went to best buy and they told me it was returned after 1 day due to him preferring an LG OLED but it's in Mint condition. They were willing to knock off another $100.

Only issue with the Bravia 9 when I was looking at it in the store is that there seemed to be a rainbow effect when lights were hitting it which I'm now concerned with the high hats. So now I'm unsure.

I bought an open box "Excellent" condition 65" TCL QM7 for my living room for only $458 before sales tax and warranty. It is in absolute perfect condition and looks great in my living room. I made sure to grab a 5 year warranty with my employee discount (I work for Best Buy) for a grand total of ~ $540.
