OpenAI's new $100 tier targets developers hitting Codex (and Claude Code) limits - The New Stack

Codex vs Claude Code (2026): Benchmarks, Agent Teams & Limits Compared
February 28, 2026 - ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo) gives 30-150 messages per 5-hour window with GPT-5.3-Codex. Claude Pro ($20/mo) still hits limits faster on equivalent workloads. Both now offer overflow at API rates, but the base allocation gap persists.

Usage limits feel terrible compared to Codex
The truth is Codex is simply amazing and a great value. It's just a lot more measured, is not friendly, is much more on guardrails, and is simply not as much "fun" to use. When I want an extremely serious design where I am forced to actually use my brain to work alongside an agent to engineer a serious enterprise system 5.2 xhigh is tough to beat. Even better is taking that design and giving it to opus to critically review. More on reddit.com

Claude Code vs OpenAI Codex?
I use both. Codex is better as far as usage goes. Claude code has a slight edge in speed but you often have to correct mistakes. Codex makes less mistakes. Claude max 5hr limits is often the bottle neck. Codex pro I have yet to hit any limit issues. I use both heavily work on developing AI infrastructure, institutional memory, ai orchestration of150+ agents, recursive Optimization, and running 20-100 parallel agents. More on reddit.com

Is it just me, or is OpenAI Codex 5.2 better than Claude Code now?
TL;DR generated automatically after 200 comments. The consensus is a resounding "yes," but it's not that simple. Most devs in this thread agree that OpenAI's Codex 5.2 (High/xHigh) is now outperforming Opus 4.5, especially for debugging, complex logic, and code review. However, the real pro-gamer move is to use both models together in a hybrid workflow. The most popular strategy is: Use the creative and speedy Claude Code (Opus) to generate the initial plan and code. Then, use the slower but more methodical Codex 5.2 as a strict code reviewer to find the bugs and omissions that Claude inevitably misses. A huge reason for this shift is that Claude's usage limits are absolutely brutal right now. The top comment is from a user who burned through their entire limit in 5 days of light use, and many others are getting cut off from their expensive subscriptions in hours. Meanwhile, Codex's limits are described as "non-existent." Hot tip: Some users are downgrading their Claude Code CLI to version 2.0.76 to combat the insane token burn. Basically, it's a trade-off: Codex is the slow, methodical genius, while Claude is the fast, creative workhorse. And Gemini? Yeah, we don't talk about Gemini for coding here; it's getting roasted. Codex Rate Limits Discussion Thread
I hadn’t noticed it yet, possibly ... my Codex in days… But now I have hit the new limits and it’s exactly as others are saying. I just gave it 3 minor prompts, thinking nothing of it as I rarely hit my 5H limit anyway… And then it happened… 3 minor prompts, and; You have hit your limit!. WTH?! This is absolutely, 100% unusable. ... it’s about on par with Claude code and it’s ... More on community.openai.com

Yes, and many teams do. Use Codex for background GitHub tasks and Claude Code for terminal sessions where you want more slash commands and hooks.

Why are Claude Code usage limits getting worse?
Anthropic has publicly acknowledged that users are hitting Claude Code limits faster than expected due to capacity constraints. Peak-hour throttling was introduced, and Opus quota reductions have been documented by multiple outlets since January 2026. The company is making trade-offs to keep the service stable while demand outpaces capacity.

Is Codex still better than Claude Code in 2026?
Codex still wins on GitHub integration and pricing. But Claude Code has closed the gap significantly — better UX, a VS Code extension, a web IDE, and Cowork mode. Which is better depends on your workflow. If you live in the terminal and care about GitHub automation, Codex. If you want more configuration options and hooks, Claude Code.

It seems that I've hit weekly limit, and I have no idea when it will reset (Plus subscription). Also, it feels that limits were getting gradually lower throughout the week. First and second session were really generous on inputs/outputs, but then it felt even smaller than Claude code limits with pro subscription (can you even imagine it?)

Claude Code's local approach requires less infrastructure overhead for developer-led tasks, while the Codex agent's cloud-based model provides better isolation for parallel, delegated workflows · If your team uses containerized development environments, you'll need to consider how to manage API access, costs, and security for AI coding tools like Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex agent.

r/ClaudeCode on Reddit: Usage limits feel terrible compared to Codex
January 31, 2026 -

I’ve been using Codex extensively for my software development job but decided to try claude code today with claude Pro subscription.

I tested it on common task that I has to do. In a working folder I have 11 repositories and each owns some part of a product I work on. I gave a task to explain the purpose of repositories and connections between them. Then I gave a task to fix deployment (add missing code) in one of the repositories.

The claude gave better description of repositories but nothing too crazy or deep. The code they suggested for debugging was the same. But claude literally used 30% of 5-hours usage while Codex only 3%.

Is there anything I do incorrectly or limits for claude are actually so low ?

EDIT: This is only asking about Opus 4.5 on Max 20x versus OpenAI's smartest model—so GPT-5.2-Codex set to Extra High or GPT-5.2 set to Extra High, whichever one is smarter.

TLDR: How do usage limits in the Codex harness with OpenAI's smartest model option compare to using Opus 4.5 in CC?

I'm looking into the expensive subscriptions. Can anyone with recent experience (e.g. the past few weeks) using both harnesses clarify some things?

  1. Usage limits. Does Max 20x or Codex Pro have higher limits with their respective smartest model?

  2. "Better"? When people say "codex is better than CC", I never know if they're talking about the Codex harness with...

  • GPT-5.2-Codex

  • GPT-5.1-Codex-Max (which OpenAI says is their "best model for agentic coding" as of 2 weeks ago)

  • GPT-5.2

  • GPT-5.2 Pro

  • Any one of these with "high" VS "extra high"

Is it just me, or are you also noticing that Codex 5.2 (High Thinking) gives much better output?

I had to debug three issues. Opus 4.5 used 50% of the session usage. Nothing was fixed.

I switched to Codex 5.2 (High Thinking). It fixed all three bugs in one shot.

I also use Claude Code for my local non-code work. Codex 5.2 has been beating Claude for the last few days.

Gemini 3 Pro is giving the worst responses. The responses are not acceptable or accurate at all. I do not know what happened. It was probably at its best when it launched. Now its responses feel even worse than 2.0 Flash.

r/ClaudeAI on Reddit: Claude Code vs OpenAI Plus + VSCode Codex - Usage limits comparison?
January 2, 2026 -

I'm currently using OpenAI Plus ($20/mo) with the VSCode Codex plugin that taps into my ChatGPT Plus subscription. I get:

5-hour rolling limit Weekly rolling limit

I prefer Sonnet's code quality over GPT models, but I'm trying to understand the value proposition of switching to Anthropic Pro + Claude Code.

My questions:

  • With Claude Code on the Pro plan ($20/mo), I understand you get ~10-40 prompts every 5 hours shared across all Claude usage. Is this right?

  • If I burn through 40 prompts in one heavy coding session, am I locked out for just 5 hours, or longer?

  • For those who've used both: Is the code quality improvement worth having significantly more restrictive usage limits compared to OpenAI Plus + VSCode Copilot?

Am I missing something about how Claude Code usage works that makes it more competitive with what I currently have?

I had a bad experience with Cursor where I blasted through my entire monthly token limit in one day of coding. Trying to avoid a similar situation. Kind of hard to believe that openai is just giving me free compute, what am I not seeing here?

Cheers!
