OpenAI’s o series models are advanced reasoning AI systems that use chain-of-thought processes to solve complex STEM problems through logical, step-by-step analysis. Our smartest and most capable models to date with full tool access ... Our research on generative modeling for images has led to representation models like CLIP, which makes a map between text and images that an AI can read, and DALL-E, a tool for creating vivid images from text descriptions.

Deep Research: First Impressions
February 15, 2025 - The new “Deep Research” reasoning models from OpenAI and Google dive deep into published sources and synthesize the information into detailed and readable reports. (Leonardo) Since I’m less interested in traditional science, I posed it the challenge of planning a short vacation in Hokkaido, Japan. Deep Research provided great overviews of the resorts and sightseeing options, but I was particularly impressed with its ability to ask follow-up questions before embarking on the research.

OpenAI Researcher Quits, Saying Company Is Hiding the Truth
3 weeks ago - In his final parting message shared internally, he wrote that the economic research team was veering away from doing real research and instead acting like its employer’s propaganda arm. Shortly after Cunningham’s departure, OpenAI’s chief strategy officer Jason Kwon sent a memo saying the company should “build solutions,” not just publish research on “hard subjects.”

Sam Altman says OpenAI will have a ‘legitimate AI researcher’ by 2028 | TechCrunch
October 28, 2025 - OpenAI says its deep learning systems are rapidly advancing, with models increasingly able to solve complex tasks faster. So fast, in fact, that internally, OpenAI is tracking toward achieving an intern-level research assistant by September 2026 and a fully automated “legitimate AI researcher” by 2028, CEO Sam Altman said during a livestream Tuesday.

These pros were stunned by OpenAI Deep Research
February 24, 2025 - But seven out of 19 respondents—including Wolnitzek—said OpenAI’s response was at or near the level of an experienced professional in their fields. A majority of respondents estimated it would take at least 10 hours of human labor to produce a comparable report. I see these results as hugely significant. It’s not just that Deep Research is likely to be useful across a wide range of industries.

Four out of six team members attending this AMA are PhD students, conducting research at universities across the world. What exactly does it mean that they're part of OpenAI now? They're still going to conduct & publish the same research, and they're definatelly not moving to wherever OpenAI is based. So MSR, Facebook, Google already publish their work. Universities are there to serve humanity. DeepMind's mission is to "solve AI". How would You describe difference between those institutions and OpenAI? Or is OpenAI just a university with higher wages and possibilites to skype with some of the brightest researchers? You say you want to create "good" AI. Are You going to have a dedicated ethics team/comittee, or You'll rely on researchers' / dr Stuskever's jugdements? Do You already have any specific research directions that You think OpenAI will pursue? Like reasoning / Reinforcement learning etc. Are You going to focus on basic research only, or creating "humanity-oriented" AI means You'll invest time in some practical stuff like medical diagnosis etc.?

Is OpenAI planning on doing work related to compiling data sets that would be openly available? Data is of course crucial to machine learning, so having proprietary data is an advantage for big companies like Google and Facebook. That's why I'm curious if OpenAI is interested in working towards a broader distribution of data, in line with its mission to broadly distribute AI technology in general.

February 5, 2025 - Deep Research’s high pass@1 score shows that even its first attempt at answering a GAIA question is more accurate than previous models. The cons@64 score (which measures performance with multiple response attempts) further highlights its ability to self-correct and refine its answers based on new information. OpenAI also performed internal evaluations, in which Deep Research was rated by domain experts on expert-level tasks.

November 24, 2025 - In an all-hands company meeting shortly after the board meeting, Sutskever said that firing Altman was "the board doing its duty", but the next week, he expressed regret at having participated in Altman's ouster. Altman's firing and OpenAI's co-founder Greg Brockman's resignation led three senior researchers to resign from OpenAI.
