I've been a Gnome diehard from way back in my Red Hat days in the early 2000s. Gnome was always "flashy and cool" with awesome themes and animations. But then it inexplicably started going so minimalist as to be completely unusable without installing extensions. I don't get the point of shipping something so barebones knowing everyone will just install the exact same extension just to get basic functionality (tweaks, extensions manager). Gnomes philosophy just doesn't make any sense to me anymore. It's insane to rely on 3rd party extensions written by god knows who to make your DE actually usable. KDE on the other hand was always the ugly Windows clone to me. Cluttered and busy with menus upon menus. But Gnome changed, and frankly Gnome is an absolute mess that won't be fixed any time soon when it comes to factional scaling. It was fractional scaling that finally pushed me over the edge to try KDE again. I tried this on my favored distro (pop_os) and it was pretty bad. Googling which distro had the best KDE implementation landed me on openSUSE... And it's insanely good. Font rendering is outstanding, integration with Firefox is outstanding, fractional scaling is damn near perfect and doesn't completely kill gaming by making games render at 5k to be scaled to 4k like Gnome does. I've discovered how great KDE theming has become too, because a well themed desktop makes every linux user happy. I'm just in love with openSUSE and KDE. Answer from velinn on reddit.com

r/openSUSE on Reddit: openSUSE desktop environments
April 7, 2022 -

I know that this is a general linux question but maybe openSUSE does things a bit differently or suggests things differently. I like gnome, but since gnome 42 there are no customizations, except some small tweaks. Although I don't like to customize things, especially not in the way like kde allows you, I still like to change some small things on gnome. But since it doesn't allow it anymore I'll have to check KDE. So, my questions are: can multiple DE's be installed and how does openSUSE support multiple DE's? Maybe it suggests to install just one DE. can DE's completely be replaced, like installing a new one and deleting the old one? Can other DE's be added, ones that aren't in the installation list and will this affect the distro stability? And what is the recommended DE by openSUSE?

You can install any desktop environment you want, and you can have multiple. You'll just have multiple copies of apps that do the same task. They shouldn't affect the stability of your system, though bugs may slip through testing from upstream (the DE's developers). Also there is no recommended DE for openSUSE.

You can have multiple DEs installed, you'll then just pick what you want to use before logging in. You'll just have multiple apps that do the same, since GNOME and KDE both install their own file explorer or text editor for example. There is no default DE, instead you'll manually select one at install time. You get GNOME, KDE and Xfce presented as equal options, but there are also IceWM and i3wm available with the footnote that IceWM is very basic and i3 is only supported by the community. It should be noted that regardless of your choice, IceWM is installed as a backup in case your current DE breaks, unless you specifically select "no DE". You can also completely remove any DE you currently have installed, even if it's the only one. Zypper uses metapackages (so called patterns) for this, you can just use sudo zypper rm -u to remove any package or pattern along with all of its dependencies that aren't needed by another package. For example, if you already have GNOME installed and want to also install KDE along with all the applications that would be installed if you selected KDE at install time, install the patterns-kde-kde package with sudo zypper in patterns-kde-kde. If you wanted to remove GNOME in the future, you could always use sudo zypper rm -u patterns-gnome-gnome.
