Tumbleweed, slowroll or Leap - Open Chat - openSUSE Forums
March 2, 2024 - I have always had TW installed ... to slowroll. As I’ve often mentioned, I have a particularly old laptop (but with an SSD) that has always done its job. In addition to the old laptop I have a NUC 12 PRO with Intel core i5 1240P with Windows 11 PRO and in virtualbox I have tried many vms, especially openSUSE TW. I recently re-enabled Leap 15.6 KDE which ...

Clarifying Misunderstandings of Slowroll - openSUSE News
January 19, 2024 - Regarding Slowrolls relationship with openSUSE Leap, it’s important to note that Slowroll is not a replacement for Leap. Rather, it provides an alternative for users seeking more up-to-date software at a slower pace than Tumbleweed, but much ...

Help choosing Slowroll or Leap, from Tumbleweed - Open Chat - openSUSE Forums
Hello! I don’t want to give up on Opensuse, but I’ve broken and had to reinstall tumbleweed so many times. I think I want to switch off tw, but I’m not sure to what. I read something on this forum that I can’t find that said if I don’t update tumbleweed often, it’s bad (wish I could ... More on forums.opensuse.org

What do you think about opensue want to replace leap with slow roll ?
Leap's key purpose is to be a free distro that is in sync with the desktop version of SLE. But I'd guess that most users of Leap aren't SLE developers. They're just openSUSE users who don't want a rolling release. So when SLE goes to an ALP model, those Leap users will need a home, and slowroll makes sense. More on reddit.com

Future of Slowroll with Leap 16 Announcement
In reading the announcement of a forthcoming Leap 16, I saw no mention of Slowroll and would like to inquire as to Slowroll’s status. Is Slowroll being discontinued? Will openSUSE be providing both Leap and Slowroll versions? Thank you. More on forums.opensuse.org

Is leap still viable? Slow roll?
To be honest tumbleweed would very likely still fit your use case even if it's rolling. It's so stable that it really doesn't matter. As for leap: Yes it's getting axed. What exactly will happen with it nobody knows. From what I know there are two "competing" ideas within the Opensuse world for a successor, slow roll (my favorite) or that immutable thing. Since the former is just TW but slower it's what I would prefer, you'll still get Yast, full proper KDE and all the goodies that make TW TW. The immutable stuff came over from the corporate/server world and basically no private classic desktop user asked for it. Anyway, since Slow Roll is just an experiment for now I'd go with Tumbleweed as said above. I know, coming from an LTS this might sound scary at first but it really isn't. IF something weird happens (which never happened in my two years of using it) you can roll back with a press of a button. More on reddit.com

r/openSUSE on Reddit: I don't really understand the point of Slowroll at all.
December 23, 2023 -

Slowroll as a replacement for Leap doesn't make any sense to me. Leap is a fixed release distro and Slowroll is just a slower Tumbleweed. I've never understood the point of a delayed rolling release because you aren't getting the latest versions of software as they come out but you also aren't getting a stable system. It has the drawbacks of both Tumbleweed and Leap with (seemingly) none of the advantages of either. I know with the announcement of the ALP Leap is kind of dead, but I don't think Slowroll is an idea that even makes any logical sense.

OpenSuse Leap to be discontinued, Introducing SlowRoll
July 22, 2025 - OpenSuse SlowRoll will pull from OpenSuse Tumbleweed with a focus on stability. They expect package upgrades to mostly happen once a month, except for bug fixes and CVE’s that will have more of a direct route. Leap will have one more release being 15.6 around June of 2024.

openSUSE Slowroll: The King Is Dead, Long Live the King!
September 25, 2023 - However, openSUSE decided it was time to change course. Along these lines, users were recently polled about how they see the future Leap successor going. It is worth noting that we’re no longer discussing whether one will exist but who it will be. Two options were proposed: Linarite – a regular old-fashioned release desktop distribution, likely with a narrower package selection than is used to with Leap. Slowroll – a Tumbleweed’s derivative, attempting to provide something more stable than full-speed-rolling Tumbleweed.

September 15, 2024 - openSUSE Slowroll uses a modified version of openSUSE Tumbleweed to give a little more stability to users who don‘t want the bleeding edge but also don’t want to wait 12 months for a minor release or 3 to 4 years for a major release like openSUSE Leap.

openSUSE offers Slowroll distro as Tumbleweed alternative
October 3, 2023 - Like the existing openSUSE Tumbleweed, Slowroll is a rolling-release distro, albeit with a much slower release cycle, which is intended to make it more appealing to users who currently run Leap, openSUSE's stable-release distribution.

r/openSUSE on Reddit: Leap to Slow Roll upgrade?
September 15, 2023 -

hi,
i'd love to try the slowroll variant of opensuse, as it sounds cool.

by some shin error (secure boot related) I cannot boot none of the recent tumbleweed images linked on slowroll wikipage.

my system can boot easily with the leap usb stick, I thought maybe i'd install it and update it to the newest version and than do the upgrade to the SR. few questions:

will it work?

what's about the codecs? should I install them on the leap and than upgrade or just install them on the SR?

what are general experiences of those who are on the SlowRoll? is it stable enough for daily use (some of my hardware doesn't work on leap; tumbleweed is a bit too cutting edge for me).

cheers

ENG | Moving from Fedora 44 to openSUSE Slowroll | Pavel's devlog
May 7, 2026 - Three years ago, openSUSE used apparmor and some weird network configuration, zypper used to be slow (different compression, no parallel downloads, slow mirrors, btrfs snapshots - likely combination of more factors). Now it uses SELinux and zypper feels about as fast as dnf with exception of initial refresh. Moreover, Tumbleweed Slowroll was introduced which solves my previous issue - Leap was quite outdated for software development, whereas Tumbleweed was torrent of updates.

January 24, 2024 - I think you deserve some appreciation for all the effort you put into openSUSE Slowroll. After more than a decade with Leap (afair since 12.3) I switched to Slowroll several months ago and I'm really enjoying the experience. It strikes a great balance between the bleeding-edge of Tumbleweed and the predictability I need for my daily workflow.
