Hey all,
I'm getting quite tired of the amount of dust my Dewalt orbital sander is spewing while sanding. I hooked it up to my Rigid shop vac, but I'm worried it's going to cause the shop vac motor to burn out as it seems the shop vac may be too powerful?
Anyone have a good sander I can pick up to limit the dust or know what HP of a shop vac I should be using to prevent it from burning out while sanding?

Even the cheap Bosch models have really nice on-board, filtered dust collection. And of course they can hook up to vacs and collectors as well. Plus they’re good in terms of ergonomics and vibration without breaking the bank.

It won't hurt your vac, I do this all the time. I run a Makita on a Rigid vac right now. Next time I may switch to another sander as I'm not wild about the Makita's tiny dust port, it's hard to keep the hose attached but the dust extraction does work well. I've always found plenty of attachment options in the plumbing isle of Home Depot or the like. Rubber adapters with hose clamps are what you want for that.

April 24, 2019 - I found the solution, at least in my case, was to take an old Bi-Pap hose that I had and use it between the sander and Shop Vac hose. It is 1" and it restricts the airflow enough that it doesn't suck down to the wood as much. It still works fine and collects just as much dust as before.
