Hi all,
I have a trip to Europe coming up and would like to have some cash in euros beforehand. I saw some people saying it’s a better exchange rate to go to a local atm at the destination to exchange, but I’ve always been told to always go to the bank to exchange.
Does anyone have advice?
Capital One says they have 0 foreign transaction fees and that I can make purchases in other currencies from online vendors or if I travel abroad
But it says that they charge you fees, and other things for currency conversion and the currency conversion could be considered a cash advance
How do I avoid the obvious one I don’t want ?
Either buying online items in a foreign currency or going to Canada and spending on my card in Canada
I have a secured quicksilver card
Traveling to Europe for 3months and I leave beginning of April. How should I go about getting cash? I have a Capital One account, both debit and cc, and an Amex just cc. Trying to figure out the best exchange situation. I’ll use my Amex cc primarily but for small things and tips I think I will need a few hundred to a thousand euros. Is it better to exchange with a bank here in the US or in Europe? Is there even an atm for me in Europe? I’m starting in Lisbon, then on to Madrid, Barcelona, Cannes, Florence, Naples. That’s just my first 6 weeks. I’m north after that. Thanks for the help in advance!
I live in the United States and I recently got the Capital One Savor One credit card because it has no foreign transaction fees. My question is, when I travel abroad how can I make sure I get the best/most competitive exchange rate when paying with my credit card? The thing is, when you pay for something it will usually ask if you want to pay in the local currency or if you want to pay directly in US dollars. I have no idea what I should be clicking. Does it matter which one I choose (local currency or US dollars)? Should I be choosing a different option based on the card? Any guidance on this will help a ton.
Hi folks, few questions about using money since I see varying topics and comments about it.
We are in the US and have Wells Fargo bank as well as Capital Ons Visa and Marriott Visa credit cards.
1 - we’ve been told it’s better to get a small amount of Yen here to have ready and exchange the rest when we are in Japan - is this still sound advice?
2 - I see people saying US credit cards are fine. I’ve used my capital one in other countries without fees or issues. Will it be fine in Japan as well? More so from others’ experiences.
3 - I also see people saying to withdraw money at 7-Eleven atms with a debit card. We already have Wells Fargo debit cards - does anyone know if they make it easy to withdraw and also reimburse the fees or charge any?
Thanks!
I was planning to make an online purchase from another country using my Venture X card. When I saw the converted amount in USD, it seemed a bit higher than expected based on the current exchange rate. Upon checking, I discovered that Capital One is charging a 6% currency conversion fee. I was under the impression that foreign transactions with VextureX didn’t have any fees.
Has anyone else experienced this, or am I missing something?
So pretty much the title and probably a dumb question. The capital one website says I can use my savor card with no issue internationally with no foreign transaction fees. So if I'm traveling through Qatar and I want food at the airport I can just swipe my card as normal and it just charges automatically in local currency? Or does it convert into dollars or something?
Capital one is supposed to have no foreign transaction fee. I get that Mastercard takes a small amount off the top (1% or less) but it seems capital one or maybe it’s MC is offering a terrible rate for usd to MXN conversion? I don’t seem to have this problem for USD to EUR transactions, only seem to be getting screwed over when it comes to USD to MXN
What CC from the US offers the best rate? Is this happening with other MC cards or is it just cap one? Wondering if visa is better.
For example I just made a 214 MXN purchase which at time of conversion is $11.03 and was charged $11.48. This is 4% extra
The title says it all.
Prefer to use CC but this is not always possible. Before I leave the USA I usually grab about 200 USD worth of the necessary foreign currency from my bank but I believe they charge a fee for this.
What's your preferred method of obtaining foreign currency? Any methods to obtain miles or nix the "purchase" on the A+ @2.2%?
EDIT: Thinking about grabbing the 30k AA Citigold Checking Account Offer before my next trip (Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Finland). Supposed to have no foreign ATM fees. Anyone have any experience with this?
ATM in most countries. Do check in advance- a place like Argentina has very strict currency controls with an artificially crappy dollar->peso rate at any ATM. It would be in your interest to bring a much cash as possible there and exchange on the blue market, saving you 40%+ off your trip.
If I need cash, I'll wait and use an ATM in the country once I get there. Capital One 360 has no fees. Here are some more: http://thepointsguy.com/2014/02/the-top-11-checking-accounts-for-avoiding-foreign-atm-fees/
