The varieties we carry are not aggressive spreaders (known as garden thugs!). You'll find the habit noted for each variety (ex. clump forming or spreading) but know that varieties that do spread can be contained if spreading isn't desired. Yes! Site them to meet their sun requirements, help them get established in their first season and give taller varieties a season or two to reach their full potential. Over time, some seasonal clean-up may be needed, but those recommendations are noted on each ornamental grass variety in our plant care section.

favorite shade tolerant ornamental grasses?
Carex, hundreds of different varieties. Generally only a few available at garden centers, but you can buy over the internet if you have something very specific you are looking for. In my area Southern Living has their Evercolor brand which has some really nice looking ones. http://evercolorplants.com/#varieties You didn't say where you lived, but hellebores and heuchera are some other small/tough evergreen shade loving plants that flower and have very nice foliage. Shade tolerant ornamental grasses
Dwarf Fakahatchee, (Tripsacum floridanum) Pineywoods Dropseed, (Sporobolus junceus) Florida Dropseed, (Sporobolus floridanus) Inland Oats (Chasmanthium latifolium) maybe the most shade tolerant of the bunch All come to mind for being able to handle part sun. If it's mostly shaded or wet, I'd say Sword Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata) - Please note the scientific name to avoid planting the close look a like, non native / invasive Sword Ferns. Can someone recommend a tall ornamental grass for zone 6 and low sun? TIA
We need to know your ecoregion at the very least to figure out your climate and soil composition. What’s your light exposure. Between 2-6hr of direct sunlight? Less than 2? Dappled sunlight throughout the day? Do note that most grasses tend to get floppy when growing in low light conditions. For dappled sun, there’s river oats (Chasmanthium latifolium) and bottlebrush grass (Elymus hystrix). Both have specific growing requirements mind you. More on reddit.com

Low maintenance ornamental grasses and plants for zone 9b?
Senecio looks great with small red Kangaroo Paws interspersed. Be sure to get a small variety because normal ones are 4-5 ft tall. It appears you might be in CA (Spanish revival and sycamores). Mendocino Reed Grass is a tidy little native with lovely golden seed heads that sort of seem to glow. Very low water and gentle cleaning once a year. More on reddit.com

Designing with Ornamental Grasses - Harmony in the Garden
February 29, 2024 - This 3’x3′ beauty is a must-have for a drought-tolerant garden. The delicate ‘eyelashes’ (or ‘mustaches,’ as my daughter says) wave in the wind on long, thin stems. In spring through summer, the grass is a blue-green color, slowly turning tan (or ‘blonde’) as fall approaches. It’s stunning, literally glowing across the garden when backlit by the afternoon sun. So many grasses turn shades of gold in the fall, making the red tones of ‘Hameln’ extra special.
