I got the XT this year and I would keep it if I were you for the MagSafe compatibility. I’ve used defenders since the iPhone 5s and haven’t had any problems. I got the otterBox symmetry on the iPhone 13 Pro Max since at the time they didn’t have a defender with MagSafe and other than some yellowing the phone stayed safe. I only switched back to the defender series (now the XT clear) since it had a port cover and USB-C is a lot more fragile than lighting was and I didn’t want to break with lint going in. I typically get the Defender pro cases for my phones, but accidentally ordered the Defender XT for my new iPhone 15 pro. I like the way this case feels better than the Defender Pro, but am wondering if it offers as much drop/impact protection. I did find some posts online saying the backs of people's phones shattered in these cases, but that was mostly with the iPhone 12, and it looks like the case has been updated since then.

They are mostly the same the XT just has magsafe and the defender pro has a slight bit more bulk especially in the rear region and it does not have magsafe. But mostly the same case aside from magsafe compatibility.

I’ve used OtterBox on my previous iphones and they have held very true. Some of them I have also use screen protectors but didn’t very much like the feel of them. Should I get a screen protector or will my phone likely be safe without it?

Yes. Put on a screen protector and replace every 3 months whether it’s broken or not. The oleophobic coating wears off after several months. So unless you want tons of fingerprint smudges on your screen all the time change out the screen protector regularly.

Get any tempered glass screen from eBay. You can get 3-4 in a pack for like $5. You will definitely want it. It’s going to save you from many small scratches and probably some big damage as well
