Never listen to anybody who tells you what you can't do. You can grow anything within reason in small pots. Use common sense. Grow bib lettuce in a yogurt tub? Heck yeah it will work. Any leaf type, spinach, arugula,...etc I'm not sure why you weren't successful with radish, they should be quick and easy to grow in small pots. Maybe I'll try some just to prove it to myself. You might look into micro greens. There is no law saying you have to grow peas to full maturity to enjoy a HEALTHY snack. However you might think about wider and shallower for your "containers" if that sounds like a good idea. There is always a way. Answer from chad1962 on reddit.com

June 5, 2024 - Their leaves never get bigger than baby lettuce size. The smallest pot I recommend is about six inches deep and about the same width. There are a few plants that work reasonably well in small pots. Shallow-rooted plants work best, as do plants that you will not harvest from often.

I keep seeing that everything basically requires a pretty large container to grow in. I thought that radishes would work but I had to move them to a cut up milk jug. My setup is mainly indoors under grow lights.

I’d like to use those non-recyclable yogurt cups that hold 2lbs (900g) of yogurt. The diameter of the container is 4.5 inches (~11cm) and a depth of 5 inches (~13cm). It appears that even lettuce needs more than that. Thanks for your help!

A multitude of species can be grown for decades in pots smaller than 1 litre. Exactly what species, though, will depend upon your climate. Tropical species can be grown indoors, but (generally speaking) only if you can provide artificial light approximating sunlight. In the line of tropicals, pemphis and small leafed figs (ficus) are two species that come to mind. Jade plants (crassula) do very well in low light indoors.

In the line of temperate plants, pinus thunbergii (Japanese black pine) is the classic bonsai tree, and can even be grown in the tropics. There are a multitude of small azaleas that are relatively carefree to grow in small pots.

I am a bonsai enthusiast, living in USDA plant zone 8. I have many varieties of maples (acer palmatum, acer ginnala, acer platanoides, and acer rubrum) that I have kept in pots smaller than 1 litre for 5 or so years now. I also have Douglas firs, lodgepole pines, pinus parviflora, pinus strobus, pinus mugo, spruce (Colorado blue, picea abies, and picea abies 'nidiformis'), cedars (Atlas and libani), elms (ulmus parviflora 'Suiju' and Zelkova serrata), cotoneasters, pyracantha, forsythia, varieties of prunus, malus and pyrus, stewartia, boxwoods, junipers, escallonia, ceanothus, and a few others that I'm not recalling right now. For bonsai we look at species with short internodes and small leaves or ones that will exhibit this behavior when confined to small pots.

But, there are a number of slow growing miniature cultivars that are sold in the U.S. for 'rock gardens'. Chamaecyparis obtusa (hinoki cypress) 'chirimen' is one that comes to mind that will do just fine with little attention for about 5 years in a 1 litre container. Cedrus libani 'Kenwith' and 'Green Prince' are a couple more of this type.

The issue really isn't what plants can be grown in pots smaller than one litre (just about any species), but the materials and techniques to do it successfully. Otherwise, just look for slow growing, miniature, 'rock garden' plants at your local garden center.

As per title. I have my container garden taken care of for the year but have a lot of leftover small pots gathered up. Any suggestions on something summer-hardy in a container? I’ve got an east exposure so partial sun lovers are best. Bonus points for plants that aren’t toxic to cats, and/or ones that hummingbirds enjoy.

June 7, 2024 - This is such a great foliage plant for a shallow pot. As the name suggests, it has a creeping habit that will cover soil and spill over the edges of a container. The foliage is a green-yellow colour so it pairs well with bright flowers. Creeping Phlox is an evergreen perennial with shallow roots. It works brilliantly as a ground cover plant, and produces masses of small flowers in late spring and early summer. If you like plants with texture, sedums are perfect. They’re low-growing and very handy for covering the soil in shallow pots.

The search terms "flowering outdoor container plants" will get you to plants that do well in containers or pots, and don't need a lot of room to spread out. You can swap out "potted" for "container" and "blooming" for "flowering." Other helpful terms to include can be "patio" and "windowbox." In some regions the term "pot plant" will also get you plants that grow well in pots (in other regions "pot plant" means marijuana). Also look for "dwarf" or "compact" varieties of bedding plants. These varieties are often developed specifically for growing in containers.

There are plenty of guides to "container gardening," that will include tips as well as lists of plants that work well. Here are a few that I found, but you may want to find a guide specific to your region.

A few specific plants that no one else has suggested yet:

  • Starflower (Pentas lanceolata)
  • Lantana
  • Million bells (Calibrachoa sp.)
  • Heliotrope
  • Ornamental peppers (the flowers aren't showy, but then they have long-lasting clusters of multicolored hot peppers)
  • Angelonia (Angelonia angustifolia)
  • Fanflower (Scaevola aemula)
  • Nemesia
  • Pansies
  • Snapdragon (if you let them go to seed they may grow back next year)

You can grow almost anything in containers; herbs, shrubs, or even trees (bonsai). But also vegetables or flowers. Try to look for plants which are sold in small containers. Examples for flowers are Marigolds (Tagetes), but also pot roses. These are just two examples of many possibilities. Have fun gardening!

my old roommates bought me a cute little totoro planter since i was taking an indoor plants class. it's really cute, but as i learned in class, plants typically like to be in a bigger pot and the bowl in this is only like 2 inches in diameter and 2 inches deep max if you fill it to the brim w soil. I think i started out with a begonia seed/pod i killed. i had the idea to start plants in there before they grow bigger, but most cuttings are a little bigger, so maybe seeds? It's a nice clay material but the size is throwing me off. any ideas?
