What kind of plants do well outdoors with direct sunlight?
Cactus and succulents will take a lot. Even then, you have to make sure you buy ones that say they take full sun. They can still burn and die despite this because there’s sun, then there’s Sacramento sun. Other options are some California natives. Some are pretty hardy in direct sun but like mentioned can die, because well, Sacramento. More on reddit.com

What are the best NON flower plants for outdoor hanging baskets?
A lot of these recommendations will burn up in full sun and will require too much water, hanging baskets are big plants in small pots exposed to the heat so they dry out super fast. I would not do Ferns. My favorite hanging plant is Silver Falls Dichondra, it's also called Silver Ponyfoot. Very heat/drought tolerant plant with incredible silver blue foliage that cascades and grows very fast. It's also a perennial in many zones or could be overwintered in a garage in colder zones. You'll want to put something in the middle for fullness because the Silver Falls only trails. I did a hanging watering can planter using Silver Falls and a Kirigami Oregano plant (bushy pink and blue/green leaves) and it looked amazing. Super low maintenance too. Sweet Potato Vine is another one that will take full sun, grows super fast and lush. It comes in lime green, dark purple and a tricolor pink/cream/mint color. That will take more water but otherwise it's super easy and fun to grow and one of my favorite trailing plants. More on reddit.com

April 30, 2020 - She recommends ornamental allium plants which are part of the onion family (it makes sense that those would do well in Chicago—our city was named after wild onions and leeks that thrived in the marshy land). October 12, 2022 - Taylor Made Landscape Design, said, "If you have a fence, trellis or arbor, consider planting at least one of these beautiful flowering vines. They come in all colors from white to nearly black. Some of them are fragrant and newer varieties are often repeat bloomers." Most roses perform best in full sun, but Taylor suggests trying the Zephirine Drouhin, which "can take a bit of shade, is dark pink, nearly thornless, and is very vigorous at nearly 14 feet."

February 10, 2024 - The first plant on our list looks like something out of a Dr. Suess story. Wild bergamot features lavender or pink petals extending out from upright tubes in the center. They bring a lively feel to a garden and bloom midsummer. Bumblebees and ruby-throated hummingbirds are drawn to the showy flowers and minty oregano scent. This flower prefers full to part sun but can do fine in shade too. During dry periods in the Chicago summer, you might notice the lower leaves turning yellow or dropping off.

June 19, 2024 -

After living in a city for 8 years with no patio or outdoor space of my own - I’ve moved to a larger space that has a beautiful, small patio. Exploring a whole new world of plants that I can leave outdoors for the summer has been so much fun. A lot of my indoor plants have moved outside full time for the summer (bird of paradise, succulents, wandering dude) but this has also allowed me to unlock a whole new genre of plants and blooms that I previously never any reason to buy or think about. Some of my new patio plants are my new favorites in my collection.

My current favorite is my Moss Rose (also know as the 10 AM plant which is when it’s peak bloom daily) - it puts out fresh blooms every day and has these really cool Dr Seuss succulent looking stems.

August 21, 2023 -

I’ve had some bad luck with trying to keep things alive on my porch, which gets a good amount of direct sunlight in the hottest part of the afternoon.

There’s things I can do to mitigate this threat with shade and placement, to some extent, but a good amount of my available real estate gets cooked in the hot part of the day.

Aside from cacti what else can I put out there without having to worry about it getting destroyed?
