UPS & Overstock.com Customer Story | UPS Supply Chain Solutions - United States
For years, we had handled shipping for Overstock, including a returns solution that let customers print their own returns shipping labels. As sales—and returns—grew, we proposed a returns outsourcing solution. Overstock was already studying how to proactively optimize their network, so the idea was timely.

Overstock.com is not refunding us $2000 despite returning our items
You need to understand how chargeback work. There is likely nothing overstock can do until your bank releases the funds. When you start a chargeback, your bank takes the money away from the vendor along with a fine. They then have about a month to defend against your dispute. They submit evidence to your bank to show the charge was valid or not. The bank then collects this evidence from them and you and makes a decision. If they rule in the vendors favour, then they have the funds returned and could then do a refund. If you win, you get the funds returned, and the vendor loses the claim and pays the fine. This can take 3 months. It's up to your bank. Overstock are likely claiming they no longer have the funds to do a refund. This is true, and they literally cannot issue a refund against the credit charge until the dispute is resolved. As a vendor, I get these occasionally, and they are a pain because the banks are so slow. Customers don't understand and expect a refund, which cannot be done if they have started a chargeback, we all need to wait until the back has made a decision. Canceling a chargeback is just you submitting evidence that the charge was valid and so the vendor should win, but it still has to go through this long process. More on reddit.com

October 20, 2025 - So I called their customer care. The person was very patient and helpful in describing what the actual numbers were - thanks. Turns out $101.48 is the item's original price without any discounts or coupons -- not the $90.32 I paid. So in the return Overstock subtracted from the $101.48 the coupon & return UPS shipping cost (4 boxes at $14.46 each).

August 21, 2020 -

Long story short, we ordered a table set from them. It didn't arrive complete and eventually the chairs were out of stock, so we returned it. My husband has confirmation of this. They didn't refund anything, so he inquired. They said because he had a chargeback open (this has dragged on for nearly three months now), they couldn't refund him. He canceled it against my warnings that this was not for him to solve. Now it's been weeks since we returned the items and they won't refund us at all or get in touch with us about it. It's like a scam company or something. I've never seen anything like it.

Are we totally screwed since he canceled the chargeback (ARGH, no need to lecture me, I WARNED HIM NOT TO DO THIS...he says he was desperate and just wanted the money)? He can't reopen it. But there has to be some recourse here. They are literally holding on to OUR money. Is there anything?

Also, never, EVER order from Overstock.com.

EDIT!

I was not clear in writing this initially.

We DID deal with Overstock for a month before doing the chargeback. OMG, what a dick move to not even deal with the vendor first. That's not how I roll at all.

We paid with a credit card. I don't approach chargebacks as a way to get free shit. We just wanted the table we ordered, and they were not being responsive or helpful in any way, shape or form. In my mind, that's when you have to turn toward the protection of your credit card.

Look up their reviews. My story is far from an isolated incident.

Thanks, everyone.

You should only do a chargeback as a last resort. If you had asked overstock for a refund they most likely would have given it to you. By having your cc company chargeback before trying to resolve the issue you made everything a lot more complicated. When you issued a chargeback Overstock probably had to pay a fee. They most likely won’t refund your whole amount if any. Some companies like Sony will ban you from their services if you issue a charge back. TLDR chargebacks are a last resort against fraudulent businesses. Go through the proper refund process first

Overstock Reviews 2025: Cost, Pros & Cons
1 week ago - Worst customer service! Sent me the wrong color item in my order when I understood it was available online otherwise I would have ordered from another vendor and saved about $20. I waited on line for over an hour to hopefully resolve and have some of my money returned but decided to return the entire order. Won't be ordering from Overstock again.

July 14, 2017 -

I saw an ad by overstock comparing shopping for furniture at a store vs. their site online, it was compelling. Since I was in the market for a new sofa I went to their site and found one I liked. I had a couple questions so I utilized their online help option to ask a couple, what I thought were simple, questions. Here is the conversation. Thanks Overstock but I think I'll stick to my local retailers for my home furnishing needs.

Carter: Hi, my name is Carter. How may I help you?

Visitor: I was wondering if I order a sofa do you deliver it inside my house and put it where i want it to go?

Carter: I’ll definitely give you the information you require.

Carter: May I have the item number please?

Visitor: I don't have an item number yet. I am just looking at options but don't want to waste my time if you don't deliver it into my house.

Carter: Sure, if you select the white glove delivery you will receive the item in to your house.

Visitor: what does that cost?

Carter: I'm sorry the cost will be depends on carrier.

Carter: Did you know for a one-time payment of $19.95, you get free shipping regardless of the dollar amount ordered for 1 year along with 5% back on every order you place?

Visitor: if I get item 17859159. What would it cost me to deliver to 84790 zip code

Carter: Please help me with the complete shipping address?

Visitor: I gave my full address in this line

Carter: I'm sorry we cannot help you with the shipping cost.

Carter: I can help you for the return shipping cost

Carter: Shall I help you for the return shipping cost?

Visitor: no. I just need to know what it would cost to have it delivered and placed into my house set up.

Carter: I'm sorry as the shipping cost will be calculated based on the item weight and shipping destination.

Carter: Have I answered your questions for now?

Visitor: no. I gave you the items and shipping address Already

Carter: I'm sorry I can help you with the return shipping cost.

Carter: The shipping cost will be $4.95 as normal if the order value is not more than $45. If the order value is more than $45 you will receive a free shipping.

Carter: I don't mean to rush you however our chat will time out in the next one minute; please respond so that we can stay connected.

Visitor: you have not answered my question

Carter: May I know the concern please?

Visitor: how do I get the white glove delivery service? Can I select it on your website?

Carter: I'm sorry the white glove delivery service is only for some items.

Visitor: which type of items? I am looking for large furniture items.

Carter: In this case please check the item by adding on the cart at the final checkout page you can see if the option is available or not as we cannot say the particular items.

Carter: I don't mean to rush you however our chat will time out in the next one minute; please respond so that we can stay connected.

edited for proper conversation spacing.

1 week ago - I spent hours shopping on line at the BB&B website and when I tried to use the gift card it would not take it. I called customer service and was info... See more ... I ordered wall lights from Overstock. When opened, the quality and appearance of both differed from what was pictured on site. I asked for a refund which I was within the return period.
